What is it? - Within the regulations, Chapter 8 specifies the requirement of beacons used ‘on high speed roads’. The vehicles included are any that stop on the highway for works purposes or inspections. These shall be equipped with either roof-mounted flashing amber warning light bar (comprising at least 2 independent light sources) or 2 independent roof mounted flashing amber warning beacons visible through 360°
To comply with the requirements, warning lamps must; • Be UN ECE Reg 65 approved for Special warning lamps
• Be fitted in the correct position i.e, if a roof mounted beacon is likely to be obscured at the rear by other roof mounted equipment, additional beacons should be fitted.
What it affects - Roof mounted beacons shall be in use when entering, leaving or moving within the site and when travelling in traffic at less than the general traffic speed and when stationary on the hard shoulder. Vehicles engaged on snow clearing, gritting operations or similar work shall display a flashing amber warning at all times when operating.

ECE Regulation 65 - Uniform provisions concerning the approval of special warning lamps for power-driven vehicles and their trailers.
What is it? - Reg 65 details the specification of Special Warning Lamps (Beacons, Roof Bars & Strobes) which are used on the highway. The regulation ensures the light output, colour, flash frequency and construction of the lamps meet the required standards. The markings on the lamps confirm the lamps approval to Reg 65.
