Wales’ identity seen in dance

CHOREOGRAPHER San- dra Harnisch-Lacey’s new double-bill TÂNis premier- ing at Newport Riverfront this evening as well as be- ing performed at The Met, Abertillery, on Thursday, March 12 at 7.30pm. Combining high-energy, fast-paced contemporary dance, breakdance and parkour, TÂN follows Wales’ journey to reclaim its cultural identity and a story unfolds where the past ignites our future. TÂN explores the politi-

cal and cultural awakening in Wales over the past cen- tury, taking an arson attack in the 1930s in North Wales as its centrepiece. On Sep- tember 8, 1936, the drama- tist Saunders Lewis, poet Lewis Valentine and novel- ist DJ Williams set fire to the RAF bombing school in Penyberth on the Llyn Pen- ninsula in North Wales, and gave themselves up at Pwllheli police station. The “three”, as they became known, were sentenced to nine months imprisonment in Wormwood Scrubs. This

CULTURAL: TAN

defining moment in Welsh history is used in TÂN to reflect onWales’ recent cul- tural journey. Setting the stage alight

with a moveable set, ar- chive footage and an origi- nal soundtrack by Bafta winner Tom Raybould, themes of identity, freedom and the power of transfor- mation are explored. Artistic Director, San-

dra Harnisch-Lacey said: “Wales has such a rich cul-

tural heritage and such a beautiful language, so I want this show to commu- nicate not only the burn- ing pain of loss, but also the hopefulness of reignit- ing a country’s future.” TÂNwill be complement-

ed by an extract of SPIN, a resounding success at the Edinburgh Fringe 2014. Tickets are £8 / £6 con- cessions and available on 01495 355800 or at blae- naugwentvenues.com
