ANDYHOWELLS chats to USrockersMounties ahead of their Cardiff showin April

MOUNTIES is the composite musical home of Hawksley Workman, Ryan Dahle, and Steve Bays who first met in 2009. Their encounter evolved from a group hug into a spectacular improvised two-week recording session three years later. Perhaps best known for their collective work in Hot Hot Heat and Fur Trade, as well as Limblifter and Age of Electric, and their celebrated solo identities, Mounties quickly made a splash with their infectiously catchy first single, “Headphones”. The band have just gone down a storm after series

of successful North American dates and are heading to UK shores this April. The band recently released their debut album Thrash

Rock Legacy. Recorded in part in Vancouver and partially in the middle-of-nowhere in Ontario, Thrash Rock Legacy has received rave reviews from critics and was nominated for the coveted Polaris Music Prize in Canada.

How did you come together as a band? We met at a Canadian music industry awards show.

We agreed that we’d be a band one day. Four years later we were.

How would you describe your music? Brilliant freedom.

Who are your musical inspirations? We’re mostly inspired by each other.

Are you enjoying touring the UK? Totally brilliant! Brilliant weather too! Loving blood pudding too!

What can we expect from your forthcoming Cardiff Gig? We always, always, always try our hardest every time, lest we dive deep into irreversible depression.

Tell us about your debut album? Thrash rock legacy is the sum of all our childlike

fantasies filtered through a lofty bombast. Ninjas lan- guishing in car parks lousy with the Lamborghini Coun- tach. The concord jet’s night time cleaning staff tell-all best seller. The unexplained deaths of thousands of astro turf devotees. Pump high cuts contributing to a playoff series of merciless slam dunks. Space Lego intermingling with the rarest Star Wars figurines.

You’re back in the studio soon – what can you tell us about your next release? The above times a thousand.

The band will play in Clwb Ifor Bach in Cardiff on 14th April. Mounties: Ryan Dahle (left), Steve Bays, Hawksley Workman. Photo: Rebecca Blissett Singer-songwriter is set to
