elcome to our special March issue focus- ing on animal welfare. As you probably know, Natural Awakenings is a franchise and most of our leading-edge content comes from our corporate office fresh every month. Each pub- lisher (currently 95 of us) customizes and augments their publication with local articles, advertisers, directory and calendar. I feel very fortunate to be a part of such a
wonderful company and family of publishers. This month I feel particularly grateful because, like many of our readers, I am a big proponent
of our animal friends. Most everyone has a cause that’s close to their heart—mine is animals. This month’s feature offers ideas as to how we all can pitch in one
way or another, making the most of our stewardship on Earth: picking up litter; contacting companies and lawmakers about changes we want to see; participating in Meatless Mondays; and overall being an aware, conscious consumer. As in everything, there are degrees of participation: just because we
can’t do it big (give $100, for example) doesn’t mean we shouldn’t do any- thing (give $10). The gift doesn’t have to be money—it can be educating others, lobbying, building, fixing, creating, donating old blankets or news- papers and so much more. This year, “Celebrate Compassion” is the theme of Twin Cities’
