The Peninsula Paris, where George Gerswhin wrote An American in Paris
To save space in the hotel’s traditionally small, Haussmannian rooms, Flavie+Paul played clever, eliminating the usual large wardrobes and, instead, creating an innovative, open storage system in a corner. The bathrooms also boast space-saving, made-to- measure shelving.
The suites’ creative concepts
are particularly noteworthy. The ‘Suite Gourmandise’ is dedicated to the food experience that’s become so central to modern travel. Decorated in a Champagne colour palette, the suite comes replete with a box of artisanal chocolates and a bottle of bubbly. Guests of the ‘Cinema Suite’, meanwhile, are provided with access to a selection of films to watch in their very own projection lounge. Tel: +33 1 43 37 81 25 Email: La_Demeure@

THE PENINSULA PARIS When Peninsula Hotels opened its first European property on the Avenue Kléber last August 1, it made headlines around the world. The Hong Kong-based hospitality group spent millions on the restoration of this century-old building, where George Gershwin wrote An American in Paris. The restoration saw artisans in niche fields – such as the gilders who restored the Statue of Liberty’s flame – recruited and the result is a veritable showcase for French craftsmanship and savoir-faire. This is a palace hotel by every definition – from its gilded shopping arcade and haute cuisine restaurants to the terraced suites and spa by ESPA. The 200 rooms are equipped with every possible convenience, including digital bedside tablets preset in one of 11 languages and nail dryers for freshly manicured hands. And did we mention the fleet of bespoke luxury cars parked out front? There’s even a restored 1934 Rolls-Royce Phantom II.

MEYERHOLD HOTEL & SPA This new design-driven hotel in the 9th arrondissement recreates the ambiance of a private home in a classic Parisian town house. The hotel’s owners, Monsieur et Madame Atlani, enlisted couture textile designer Anne Gelbard to re-imagine the interior and she was inspired by the Constructivism and Bauhaus movements of the 1930s. Each of the 29 rooms is uniquely styled and features a melange of contemporary decor and antiques sourced from markets in Paris and Brussels. In fact, each of the six floors has a different design scheme, such as ‘The Dandy’, ‘Le Nom du Capitaine’ and ‘Bauhaus’. The creature comforts also run the gamut, from in-room robes and organic bath products to free wi-fi. The Atlanis and Anne Gelbard have succeeded in creating an elegant, vibrant haven, replete with splashes of colour and Art Deco armchairs. The facilities include a tea salon, a Champagne bar and a small spa featuring a hammam and two treatment rooms. Tel: +33 1 76 76 69 26 Email: hotel@hotelmeyerhold .com
