If you’ve started looking to hire someone to help you realize your dream bath or kitchen, you have no doubt noticed the incredible number of designers and contractors out there. In a way, the broad selection is impressive. On the other hand, it’s a bit intimidating. In fact, it could be so overwhelming that you don’t even know where to begin. You may wonder if you’ll actually ever be able to determine the perfect person for your particular project.
Seeing a kitchen or bath designer’s professional affiliations is one of the best ways to start narrowing down your options. You can narrow them down even further when you see the NKBA logo, designating that professional as being NKBA certified.
So what does the NKBA designation really mean? What sets an NKBA certified professional apart from one who isn’t certified?
NKBA certification requires extensive (and continuing) education and experience in the kitchen and bath industry.
Even the most basic NKBA certification requires no less than two years hands-on experience and 30 hours of formal education in the kitchen and bath design field. And those numbers build exponentially with each consecutive certification.
In order to maintain current certifications or gain more advanced ones, continuing education is a necessary requirement. Through this requirement, the NKBA helps its members keep up with the continual evolution of technology and materials on the market today, as well as changing building codes and regulations. NKBA course curriculum, articles and newsletters cover all the latest in kitchen/bath design, safety and regulations, space planning, sales, project management, drafting, manufacturing, cabinet design, installation, plumbing, hardware, electrical systems, etc.
