spearheads Swedish Orient’s promotion
John Good Shipping has been appointed UK liner agent for Swedish Orient Line’s service between Finland and Tilbury, introduced on 1 December as part of a move by the operator to increase its range of ro-ro services from the already established Finland-Germany route to include Benelux and the UK. The new service, supported
by Stora Enso – one of the world’s largest manufacturers of pulp and paper - will be served by two modern 1A super ice class vessels calling weekly at Kemi, Oulu, Lübeck, Zeebrugge, Antwerp and Tilbury. It can carry trailers, project cargo and new and used vehicles in both directions. SOL already operates an
established service between
Zeebrugge and Gothenburg and can also offer a weekly connection between Tilbury and Gothenburg, departing Tilbury on a Friday with arrival of the vessel in Gothenburg on Monday. Gothenburg-based SOL
is privately owned through Imperial Shipping. The company offers a number of other services including
ship management
and a project and contract cargo division. The new agency also marks
a return to the Scandinavian trade for John Good Shipping, a region with which it has a long association.

Shipping alliances to stay under the microscope
The Global Shippers’ Forum (GSF) has welcomed the new EU Commissioner for Competition, Margrethe Vestager’s statement that she will keep a ‘close eye’ on container shipping mega-alliances. GSF said it had already called on the European Competition Commission to monitor such alliances for compliance with EU competition rules. GSF secretary general, Chris Welsh, said: “Effective monitoring is
absolutely essential to ensure they are compliant with EU competition rules.”
Ms Vestager said operations
coming under scrutiny would include the 2M alliance between Maersk Line and MSC - the two biggest container carriers in the world – launched in late December - and stated that if necessary she would “strike” against it or one of the other major alliances if they were to interfere with free competition.

New link between Humber and east Sweden
Baltic Euro Lines will offer a new liner service between East Coast Sweden, Northern Holland and the Humber from the New Year. A joint venture by Norwegian shipping companies, Seafront Maritime and Kopervik-based Northwest Ship Management, the service will commence operation with one multi-purpose side-port vessel, MV Skog, with a cargo capacity of about 4,100 tonnes. It will serve Oxelösund on Sweden’s east coast, Eemshaven in Northern Holland and Immingham (ABP terminal) and Hull (Albert Dock), with both UK ports served on each voyage.
3 Baltic Euro Lines managing director, Jan Rune Loevlie, commented:
“We established the fortnightly service to fill a gap we see in the market for predominantly industrial cargoes between Sweden, Holland and the Humber. Our side-port vessel gives us tremendous flexibility to accommodate loose on board goods, out of gauge cargoes and containers of all types.” The multi-purpose vessel will
have capacity for containers, forest products and palletised goods through its side-port and deck space for larger cargoes.
