• Accountancy and business advisory firm BDO LLP has promoted 14 team members in its Southampton office. Newly-appointed director Deborah McSorley (above), working in the private client sector, is among nine women who have been promoted within the office. In the past 23 years, McSorley has worked in the private client services team, advising wealthy entrepreneurs, dealing with legal practices and working with professionals such as barristers and surgeons. The other promotions were: Rachel Hardy, Rachael Tomlinson, Alex Stansbury, Rachel Doran, Tim Hayter, Marc Page, Nigel Foottit, Nicola Walker, Gemma Wright, Laura Hayward, Andy Hamman, Charlotte Stanley and Emma Lawrence.
• Southampton-based solicitors Paris Smith has promoted corporate senior solicitor Richard Atcherley to partnership with the firm. Sean Davies, head of department, commented: “Richard has unflinchingly developed his business-orientated practice with us over the past seven years and is well set to continue that with this deserved promotion.“ Managing partner Peter Taylor added: “Richard’s promotion is a natural progression for him. He is a popular solicitor in the business community with a client base covering a wide range of sectors in the region.“
• After a 50-year career at Dorset’s Wessex Group, where he began as an apprentice and finished as a managing director, Gordon Green has retired. Over 100 staff, past and present, attended his farewell event at the Royal Chase Hotel in Shaftesbury and wished him well for the future. Wessex Group is now a multi-million- pound company with nearly 400 staff, but when Green started in 1964 the only other person there was founder Tony Morgan. In a speech, Morgan said: “Gordon has been a major and pivotal part of Wessex Group’s success.“ Green added: “When I started I didn’t know what a computer was and we couldn’t have imagined carrying a phone around.“
• Accounting and business advisory firm Baker Tilly has appointed a new head for its pensions centre of excellence in Southampton, to enhance its offering to its clients in the south. Karen Tasker, a director at Baker Tilly, has relocated to the Southampton office to lead the team which provides audit and assurance services to schemes across the region. In addition to audit, her team of six will also offer services such as risk management reviews, covenant assessments and trustee training.
• Jon Fisher has joined Hilton at The Ageas Bowl as its new director of sales, marking the start of the new hotel’s recruitment drive in the lead- up to the grand opening in May 2015. He joins the team with over four years’ experience in the region’s hospitality industry.
• Mark Smith, chief executive of The Southern Co-operative, has been announced as the chair of Business in the Community’s flagship education programme, Business Class, in the Solent area. The Business Class programme supports employers in working strategically with local secondary schools, to drive employability and raise the aspirations of young people. It has been awarded a £600,000 boost from the UK Commission for Employment and Skills (UKCES) to partner schools across the region.

• Robin Hutson, chairman and CEO of Lime Wood Group and Home Grown Hotels (The Pig hotels), has appointed Angela Hartnett MBE as a company director to the boards of both companies. The appointments come along with a new three-year contract for her continued involvement with Hartnett Holder & Co. Hutson said: “Angela’s contribution to the restaurant operation has been considerable and her style is a great fit for us.“
• Catherine Maxfield, managing partner of Eric Robinson Solicitors, has been appointed as trustee to the Skill Quest Trust, the charity responsible for the Solent Education Business Partnership which supports young people in developing employment skills. Angela Wright, chief executive of the Solent EBP, said: “We are delighted that Catherine has managed to find the time to bring her expertise and experience to the board.“
• Solent law firm Coffin Mew has added qualified solicitor Amy Trench to its family department. Trench worked in family law for two years as a paralegal before completing her training contract at Moore Blatch where she also gained experience in employment, tax, trusts and professional negligence. She qualified as a family law solicitor in 2013. Trench has knowledge and experience of dealing with cohabitation and separation, divorce, financial matters and pre-nuptial agreements.
