ROMAN ROT A study of 303 skulls from a Dorset burial site dating back to Roman times (c. 200-400 AD) found far fewer cases of moderate to severe periodontitis compared to today. Our forebears appeared to enjoy improved dental health with about fi ve per cent of 20 to 60-year-olds suff ering gum disease. The fi ndings point to the role played by risk factors like smoking and diabetes in determining susceptibility to progressive periodontitis in modern populations.
