vehicles that had not been inspected for safety defects as feder- ally required. “It is imperative that every bus company and driver operates in full compliance with federal safety regulations,” said FMCSA Acting Deputy Administrator Rose A. McMurray. “For the FMCSA and its state partners, enforcing safety standards and accessing civil penalties that keep unfit carriers and drivers off the road is critical to protecting the millions of students return- ing to their classrooms this school year.” Lehane’s Bus Service, Inc., can contest the alleged violations

EPA ANNOUNCES $64 MILLION IN CLEAN DIESEL FUNDS Te Environmental Protection Agency is giving school districts
very little time to apply for any fiscal year 2009 and 2010 National Clean Diesel Funds, with the Dec. 8 deadline for request for pro- posals looming. Te funds, estimated at $64 million, can be used to replace older diesel school buses with those that meet EPA’s 2007 and 2010 emissions levels. Schools can also fund retrofits, idling technology, clean fuels, aerodynamic tires and engine repowers. Replaced vehicles must be scrapped or returned to the original
manufacturer for remanufacturing “to a certified cleaner emis- sion standard.” Evidence of the disposal must also be provided as part of the final assistance agreement report submitted to EPA. Like with the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act of
2009, which included $300 million in clean diesel funds, appli- cants were only given about two months to submit proposals. EPA’s request for proposals and a list of verified projects is avail- able at
