NHTSA Unveils Planned Updates to School Transportation Curriculum
School transporters can expect new
National Highway Traffic Safety Ad- ministration driver in-service safety curriculum this month, one of several announcements made this past fall by a federal representative. During the National Association of
State Directors of Pupil Transportation Services annual meeting in Louisville, Ky., in October, the group was updated on a number of developments from the past year by NHTSA Pupil Transportation Safety Program Manager Leah Walton. Te presentation included updates on the school bus driver in-service safety series and the child passenger safety restraint systems on school buses national training, as well as mention of both a child passen-
ger safety restraint systems training video and a new addition to the child pedestri- an safety curriculum. Te in-service safety series is scheduled
for a January 2010 release and was going through a final review at the agency. Also on deck is the child passenger safety re- straint systems on school buses national training program, which underwent a full revision in 2008. Due to budget constraints, NHTSA reduced the amount of print mate- rials included but will continue to produce CD-ROMs with the full course content. Walton said NHTSA also began pro-
duction of a training video to illustrate sections of the national child passenger safety restraint systems (CSRS) training. Te 20-minute video, which will be available by
spring 2011, will demonstrate proper in- stallment of three to four different types of restraint systems on a school bus and the proper placement of a child in each CSRS. It is designed to provide information to those school bus drivers and monitors who have yet to obtain certification. A new lesson will soon be added to the
Child Pedestrian Safety Curriculum that will focus on school bus safety and will teach students safe bus-riding behavior and cor- rect boarding and exiting procedures. It was pilot-tested during the 2008-2009 school year in eight different school districts na- tionwide. Te schools that completed the activities said they felt the lesson was very well received by their students. It is expect- ed to be available this spring. n
