BOOK REVIEW

‘Motor Fleet Safety: Standards and Practices’ By Jack Burkert, C.D.S. Published by the Maryland Motor Truck Association | www.mmtanet.com | $49.95 print, $199.95 electronic

Jack Burkert has had a successful and

fulfilling career in transportation. He has developed programs that have been taught throughout the transportation industry for many years, and written many books on safety. It would be rare to find someone with more education, experience and knowledge of the industry than Jack has accumulated. Burkert has mustered the ambition to put

his vast experience on paper in a book that is over 300 pages. His style of writing is easy to comprehend and relate to. While safety is the main topic of the book, he covers all areas related to transportation including: hiring and retaining good employees, train- ing, supervision, maintenance, accidents, regulations, and more. Tis is a complete book on transportation operations.

Tis book will benefit any safety man-

ager, but it is well worth the time to read for anyone involved in the management of a transportation operation of any kind. If I were a director, I would make this a must- read for my safety managers. While most of the references pertain to

the trucking industry, most of the applica- tions are the same as student transportation. As another individual in the sunset of my

career, I truly admire and appreciate the abil- ity and ambition of Burkert to document this collection of knowledge and experience.
