Te students now access the Web to research information for assignments, e-mail their teachers or just surf the Web while riding to and from school. Students call it the “In- ternet Bus,” and many now use their travel time to complete school work. Te bus driv- er and its riders agree that there has been a big change since the router was installed. It looks as though we can expect to see Wi-Fi appearing on more buses in the near future. According to the company marketing the router, Autonet Mobile, they have also sold equipment to schools and/or districts in Florida, Missouri and Washington, D.C.


BUS COMPANIES IMPLICATED IN FEDERAL BRIBERY SCHEME CLEARED TO RECEIVE CONTRACTS Eleven school bus companies that were


recently implicated in a federal bribery scheme were cleared to receive more than $420 million in city transportation con- tracts by a schools policy committee. Te probe, which grew out of a bid to


dismantle the Genovese crime family’s reputed control on the local bus drivers’ union, brought down seven city school bus officials for extorting or collecting bribes from the companies and their affiliates. DOE officials said the companies, which


were not prosecuted for their alleged roles in the bribery schemes, have all agreed to strict monitoring and to contracts that would save the city a significant amount of money and that the contracts were extended only after input from the U.S. At- torney’s Office. Officials also stressed that none of the concerns about the companies were related to the safety of their services.


COLORADO REJECTS BILL ON SCHOOL BUS SEAT BELTS…AGAIN For the second time in the last two ses-


sions, a proposal to require seat belts on school buses died in the Colorado Senate. House Bill 1232 would have clarified the definition of school vehicles in state law. Senate President Brandon Shaffer, who has supported school bus safety belt leg- islation, offered an amendment to the bill that would have required all buses pur- chased after June 30 to have three-point lap/shoulder belts and for all passengers to
