Sending your little one off to be educated at the tender age of four is a difficult enough undertaking, without having to worry about whether their pastoral and academic needs are really being met. As every parent knows, you cannot get the time back with your little loved one and making the right decision is vital to giving a child the best start in life.
Chapter House Preparatory School is part of Queen Ethelburga’s Collegiate, near York, which boasts a position in the top ten schools in the country, according to the Daily Telegraph independent schools’ league table.
Children from the age of just 3 months can start at Queen’s Kindergarten and then move on to Chapter House at the age of three years. With its own purpose-built classrooms, play and sports facilities, Chapter House aims to provide a supportive learning environment, giving each youngster the very best opportunity to become independent, responsible and successful students.
“Our school provides a place where every pupil can achieve their full potential, whether their talents are academic, creative or in the field of sport. We pride ourselves on encouraging our children to become confident and enthusiastic members of the school community,” says Head of Chapter House, Karen Kilkenny. “Children may come to us with very little skills in structured learning but with child-led and adult-led activities at the start, we help them to gain confidence and begin to foster skills in reading, language and number work,” she adds.
By the time children join Key Stage 2 at the age of 7 years, pupils would be expected to be competent readers, have good verbal and writing skills and the ability to apply their knowledge of number and data handling.
From the age of 3, Chapter House pupils are introduced to science, in the school’s own laboratories. All pupils have access to computers, laptops and interactive white boards. French is introduced from the age of 5 years. Dance, music, art, swimming and physical education extend the range of children’s learning.
Facilities at the Collegiate in North Yorkshire are outstanding. Chapter House pupils attend the campus’ own £16 million Sports Village, replete with an aqua centre, sports hall complex, fitness suite and outside courts and pitches. Boys will play rugby, football, basketball and cricket and will take part in swimming, cross-country and athletics. Girls will play hockey, netball, rounders and basketball as well as swim and do athletics.
Classwork in Chapter House is supplemented with educational visits off site and visitors coming to the school.
For those making QE their home, the boarding facilities are fantastic. All bedrooms are en-suite and have direct dial telephones, television/dvd and gaming ports (on timers) and luxury furnishings. The house parents have settled thousands of children over the years and are always on hand to help with homework or simply help make hot chocolate.
The school’s motto is “to be the best that I can with the gifts that I have” and Queen Ethelburga’s is the place to prove that.
