Maine Maritime Academy Professor Paul Wlodkowski Receives Fulbright Scholar- ship, Plans for Spring Semester in Russia CASTINE—Maine Maritime Academy Professor of Engineering, Paul Wlodkows- ki, Ph.D. of Ellsworth, has received a Ful- bright Scholarship to advance international exchange in engineering education. Profes- sor Wlodkowski will conduct research and teach engineering courses in both English and Russian at the Admiral Makarov State University of Maritime and Inland Shipping in St. Petersburg, Russia for six months. Wlodkowski’s project is titled, “Advancing Global Engineering Education Through a Maritime Lens.”
The Fulbright Program is the fl agship international educational exchange program sponsored by the U.S. government. It is designed to increase mutual understanding between the people of the United States and the people of other countries. The Fulbright Program provides participants—chosen for their academic merit and leadership poten- tial—with the opportunity to study, teach and conduct research, exchange ideas and contribute to fi nding solutions to shared international concerns.* “In addition to affording me the oppor- tunity to teach overseas in my area of ex- pertise, the Fulbright award enables collab- orative research in engineering education, as well as exposure to the Russian method in pedagogy,” said Professor Wlodkowski. “As a result, I will conduct a comparative assessment of engineering curricula, which will serve as a precursor to future student and faculty exchanges. Moreover, I believe this collaboration in engineering education research will naturally promote the develop- ment of a joint research program in energy and environmental systems.” Born and raised in Augusta, Professor Wlodkowski graduated from Cony High School in 1984, and went on to double major in Physics and Economics at Dartmouth, where he graduated cum laude in 1988. He earned an M.S. degree at the University of Virginia in Engineering Physics in 1990 and a Ph.D. in Reliability Engineering from the University of Maryland in 1999. He joined the Maine Maritime Academy faculty in 2002 and was appointed to the Governor’s STEM Council in 2011 to serve as represen- tative for President William J. Brennan, an ex offi cio member of the Council. Paul, his wife, Alexandra, and their three children will live abroad for the full semester, and the children will attend school in St. Petersburg. Wlodkowski is fl uent in Russian, having grown up speaking the lan- guage at home. His fi rst experience in Russia was as an exchange student at Lomonosov Moscow State University in 1988. On that trip, he met President Reagan after the Pres- ident’s summit speech at the University. He also worked as a translator for CNN during the Reagan-Gorbachev summit.
Harold Alfond Foundation Awards $3.4 Million to Maine Maritime Academy
For Engineering Scholarships and ABS Center
Dr. William J. Brennan, President of Maine Maritime Academy, announced that the college will receive $3.4 million in gifts from the Harold Alfond Foundation to support two major initiatives at the college. The Foundation will give $1 million toward the construction of the ABS Center for En- gineering, Science, and Research, and $2.4 million for the establishment of the Harold Alfond Engineering Scholarship for engi- neering students. “We want to support students pursuing an engineering degree who may not other- wise be able to afford an MMA education,”
said Gregory Powell, chairman of the Harold Alfond Foundation. “We are also investing in infrastructure that will support engineer- ing instruction and research that will enrich the student experience.”
“Finances are one of the major obstacles to a college education,” said MMA President William J. Brennan. “With the support of the Harold Alfond Foundation, we can directly affect positive outcomes for students who want to pursue a Maine Maritime Academy engineering degree.” Maine Maritime Academy will name its engineering program the Harold Alfond School of Engineering to acknowledge the continued dedication and support of the Harold Alfond Foundation to the college and its students.
Founded in 1950, the Harold Alfond Foundation furthers the philanthropic lega- cy of Harold Alfond, the founder of Dexter Shoe Company and a longtime supporter of Maine communities in which he and his family worked and resided. Harold Alfond awarded matching challenge grants to orga- nizations to build community partnerships and to inspire and leverage additional giving by others. He ensured that his philanthropy would live on by committing nearly all of his wealth to the Foundation, which continues to support charitable causes in the State of Maine.
