disabled temporarily by an accident to her propeller.
The RUTH was in command of Capt.
Ben Arey, principal owner. Capt. Arey waited until 1 o’clock so as to take advantage of the ebb tide, for had he started for Brooksville as soon as the steamer had been coal he would have had to run against a head tide all the way. Capt. Arey is thoroughly familiar with the river and darkness and fog didn’t cause him any uneasiness so he started out. It is an exceedingly tortuous stretch of river between Bangor and Winterport, diffi cult enough of navigation to keep pilots on their mettle in clear weather and broad daylight. At the time the RUTH started out, however, the Styx would have been a “great white way” compared to the Penobscot. Below Ayer’s mill the fog came in thicker than before and Capt. Arye in the pilot house couldn’t see the fl ag staff on the bow of the

Then Capt. Arey decided to make a try to bring his steamer around to go back to Bangor. He lost his landmarks several times and found them again, then lost them altogether. Finally he sighted the trees near the Union Ice Co. house and then let his steamer drift and let go his anchors. The steamer drifted in and touched bottom.
The tide was at this time about two hours on the ebb and going fast. The steamer was sent ahead and touched bottom forward. She was reversed and touched again. Then there was nothing to do but wait. The steamer lay in a basin between two gravel bars and there was no getting her out with the tide leaving her.
When the tide went out of course the steamer listed and low water found her almost on her beam ends. She was in a dangerous position and had she not been of unusually

strong construction she probably would have broken in two. When the tide came back the water was almost over the deck of the steamer. The tug STELLA went down and righted her and pumped out what was in her and towed her up to the city.

The four-masted schooner HORACE
A. STONE, hailing from Bangor, was run into Wednesday while at anchor near the mouth of Vineyard Sound, by the three- masted schooner SUSIE H. DAVIDSON. The STONE was bound from Philadelphia to Portland with coal and the DAVIDSON was bound from Portland to a coal port. The STONE lost a portion of her headgear and was towed to Vineyard Haven by the tug JOHN G. CHANDLER for temporary repairs after which she will proceed to its destination under her own sail. The DAVIDSON’s lower sails, excepting the spanker, were torn, fore and main rigging carried away and some of the timbers in her bow were broken. The DAVIDSON’s injuries were all above the water line. The weather was clear at the time of the accident and there is doubt as to how the accident occurred. The HORACE A. STONE was built at the shipyard in Brewer, formerly owned by E. & I. K. Stetson, in 1908, and is commanded by Capt. Allie Kent of Brewer. The STONE is owned principally by E. & I. K. Stetson and Horace A. Stone and is 208.5 feet long, 38.6 feet in breadth and 20.7 feet in depth. Its gross tonnage is 1376 tons and net tonnage, 1237 tons.
