Rugged Elegance at the Sundial Resort
T
he Sundial at Canyons Resort in Park City is a sprawling prop- erty with everything you can imagine from dining, outdoor bars, a gondola, shopping, rooftop hot tub, cozy outdoor heated pool, and boutique health club. Think rugged elegance that envelopes you in comfort. There is an endless array of activities to participate in whether it’s winter or summer, including: skiing and snowboarding, snowshoeing, scenic gondola rides, outdoor concerts and events, hiking and mountain bike trails, fishing, and visiting the local farmers’ market. Or you can start your day by heading to the Utah Olympic
Park and exploring one of the featured venues of the 2002 Winter Olympic Games. Walk through the Alf Engen Ski Museum and the George Eccles Salt Lake 2002 Olympic Winter Games Museum. Take a guided tour of the Olympic Nordic Jumps, Bobsled
Track and Freestyle Training Pool or sign-up to take a 70 mph ride on the Comet Bobsled or take a ride on the Alpine Slide. The rooms at the Sundial were expansive with huge balconies that span the entire length of the property. The view off the balcony was amazing, especially in the morning as the sun rose over the huge mountain peaks. Our king size bed was extremely comfort- able with plush linens. But let’s get to their ecofriendly initiatives. The food and bever- age team has made great efforts to reduce their amount of waste and they have become a leader in the community by demonstrat- ing the importance of buying locally. This program was one of the first in the area to work with the Summit County Beef organization, hand selecting meat from local farmers and works with a number of local growers to procure their herbs, vegetables, and dairy products.
The Farm restaurant has been the recipient of numerous awards featuring their farm-to-table concept sourced largely from within 200 miles of the area. The village restaurant managers, especially the team from The Farm, were innovative in creating systems to en- sure they were recycling a majority of their material. The Farm’s end goal is to be the first Zero Waste Restaurant in Utah. In addition to that, the current snowmobile fleet consists of a mix of 2 stroke and 4 stroke snowmobiles. 4 stroke snowmo- biles not only produce less carbon emissions but also require less maintenance and therefore reduce the use of oils and lubricants. In 2012, Canyons converted the entire fleet to 100% 4-stroke snow- mobiles.
One day in Park City was definitely not enough. We just had a few hours to spend walking around Main St. and I was anxious to have more time to explore. There were so many interesting boutique shops and many diverse eateries and bars. The architecture was very similar to San Francisco – multi-colored townhomes stacked together on hillside roads, but the feel and style of the shops was very western. All in all, The Sundial Resort at Canyons is a perfect place to
enjoy all the outdoor activities Park City has to offer and is conve- niently located close to downtown shops and restaurants. Visit
