Active Shooter Drills Spark Raft of Legal Complaints There has been a raft of lawsuits and legal complaints about lifelike "active shooter" exercises, which growing numbers of businesses and schools are using to train for the bedlam of a mass shooting and other violent situations. In some cases, people say they were never told the drills weren't real attacks, while in other instances they maintain that those conducting the exercises got out of hand.
Some experts, however, say recreating the chaos of a mass shooting is no way to prime for emergencies. "There ends up being zero learning going on because everyone is upset that you've scared the crap out of them," said Greg Crane, a former SWAT officer with the North Richland Hills Police Department near Dallas who holds seminars to teach civilians different strategies to deal with mass-shooting scenarios.
The confusion that sometimes ensues during drills also can have unintended consequences. In March, a teacher in Boardman, Ohio, filed a lawsuit against local police and school officials, claiming he was unexpectedly tackled by a police officer during a drill at a high school, seriously injuring his hip and shoulder.

Dealing with Extreme Security Threats Organizational resilience measures a company‘s ability to, and the speed at which it can, return to its normal performance levels following a high- impact/low-probability disruption. Many U.S organizations began looking at their vulnerability to large disruptions after the events of 9/11. However, many random phenomena such as earthquakes, floods, accidents, social or political unrest, and partner business failures have just as much impact on a company as a terrorist action. The ability to respond effectively to a high-impact event does not derive from a collection of ad-hoc actions, no matter how well-intended or highly motivated. It comes from identifying potential extreme threat impacts and building sufficient operational strength that effective recovery is feasible based upon organization-specific plans.
Although the impact may be caused by a security threat—recovery is achieved not by a security department response, but by a broader organizational response using strengths that already exist.
This is why establishing the ability to deal with extreme security threats is of high-level company concern and requires the strong support, if not the active involvement, of senior executives.
How you deal with extreme security threats will vary, depending upon your organization‘s situation: See how your company rates:
