UNITED KINGDOM: Workplace Drug Testing Up By As Much As 470%
The significant rise in workplace drug testing in the UK could see a dramatic rise in companies overstepping the mark and acting in an unlawful manner– says a leading employment lawyer. The warning follows a report on the BBC‘s website in which leading screening companies say that workplace drug testing has increased significantly in the UK.
Under the current laws, workers cannot be made to take a drugs test, but if they refuse when the employer has good grounds for testing, they may face disciplinary action. These regulations are usually in the contract or staff handbook.

Second is the importance of personal and relationship skills that support compassionate care management. Health care outcomes suffer when either of these requirements are not achieved. When health care providers exhibit non- professional behaviors it can have a serious adverse impact on staff relationships, clinical efficiency, and satisfaction that may lead to poor
quality care.
The goal of all clinicians is to provide best patient care. But unfortunately, there are a variety of factors that interfere with this goal. Understanding the causes of non- professional behaviors will help provide a better opportunity for solution.
Individual behaviors are reflective of a combination of genetics and life experiences that shape values, attitudes, and perceptions that form an individual‘s personality and influence their emotional state (see Table I). Age (generation), gender, cultural, ethnic, and religious beliefs, in conjunction with life experiences, all contribute to who we are and how we behave.

Loretta Yavorsky, a nurse, was bitten and had to have reconstructive surgery on her finger. ―I think I was in shock. I don‘t really remember pain, I just couldn‘t stop crying,‖ said Loretta. She says it gets worse. ―People threaten to come back with a gun. People threaten to come back and look for your family. It happens on a regular basis.
The Labor Department says health care is the leading industry for workplace violence. Patty Eakin, President of the Pennsylvania Association of Nurses says some hospitals are not doing enough to protect their staff and nurses are often reluctant to report abuse for a number of reasons, including fear of retribution from their employer. ―Lots of hospitals tell their nurses oh don‘t call 911. It‘s against the hospital policy,‖ said Patty.
