downsmail.co.uk Sermons now ‘loud and clear’

THERE’S a new clarity to the Sun- day morning sermons at St Philip’s in Maidstone, thanks to a new sound system. Three radio microphones and

one on the altar have been fitted in the church and speakers in the ad- joining community hall in Water- loo Street. Comments at recent services in-

clude one which said: “The first sermon I’ve heard for a long time”. Others are pleased there are no wires to trip over and another parishioner said: “I heard every word, even without my hearing aid”. The positive feedback follows fund-raising by parishioners and a legacy, believed to be from a for- mer member of the congregation, which covered the cost of just over £8,000. Janice Underdown, chairman of

the Friends of St Philip’s Commu- nity Centre, said: “On behalf of the congregation, I would like to thank everyone involved in making such a difference to our Sunday morn- ing worship.” Also this year, the Friends of St Philip’s Community Centre – a registered charity – has raised al- most £19,000 to re-wire and renew

the lights at the community centre. Mrs Underdown said: “This has

been a big chunk of the money we have raised for various work to im- prove the centre sincewe became a charity 10 years ago. “Over the years, we’ve thought

up a variety of ways to raise money, covering everything from selling horse muck to cakes and our usual fairs.” St Philip’s Church and Commu-

nity Centre will stage its Christmas Fair from 11am to 2pm on Satur- day, November 29.

A NEW priest-in-charge has been appointed to lead All Saints’ Church, Maidstone and St Stephen’s, Tovil. Rev Ian Parrish (pictured), who

cant challenges as a parish, but I have trust and confidence thatGod will guide and bless us.” Churchwarden Mollie Neaves,
