AC45s to be modifi ed; America’s Cup World Series to continue into 2018 The six America’s Cup teams have agreed to a project that will see the existing fl eet of AC45 catamarans modifi ed into fully foiling catamarans for racing in the Ameri- ca’s Cup World Series (ACWS). Importantly, the teams have also com- mitted to continue to race the foiling AC45s on the America’s Cup World Series circuit in 2018, following the conclusion of the 35th America’s Cup in 2017.
The teams have undertaken the project to modify the one-design AC45s into fully foiling catamarans with a view to racing the foiling versions as early as the 2015 ACWS season. A feasibility study has been commis- sioned to determine whether the mods will need to wait until the 2016 season as the timeline to make changes to the entire fl eet ahead of racing in 2015 is extremely tight. The competitors have also appointed a working group to select a Regatta Director, as required by the Protocol.
America’s Cup Family Loses a Giant Yves Carcelle, a long-time friend and supporter of the America’s Cup has passed away.
The Chairman and CEO of Louis Vuit- ton from 1990-2012, Yves Carcelle was a stalwart supporter of the company’s title partnership of the Louis Vuitton Cup chal- lenger series.
But more than that, Mr. Carcelle en- joyed a personal relationship with the event, the sailors, the media; the full America’s Cup family.
In the build up to the 34th America’s Cup, he visited San Diego for the Ameri- ca’s Cup World Series in 2011, and sailed on one of the AC45 wing-sail catamarans. Afterward, he spoke passionately about the America’s Cup: Yves Carcelle is a Chevalier of the French Legion of Honor and, in a refl ection of what he has meant to that country through his work on the America’s Cup, an Honorary
Member of the New Zealand Order of Merit. The America’s Cup family passes along its sincere condolences to the friends and family of Mr. Yves Carcelle. We are honored to have known him and to have had his support for so many years. He will be missed.

The 35th America’s Cup begins in 2015 and 2016 with the America’s Cup World Series, raced in venues around the world. This feeds into the main events in 2017, which will narrow the fi eld to just two: the top challenger and the defender, ORACLE TEAM USA, who will then face each other in the America’s Cup Match. Teams will be given the opportunity to
host America’s Cup World Series events at a venue of their choosing, while the fi nal ven- ue for the 35th America’s Cup will be either Bermuda or San Diego, with the selection to be made before the end of the year. Under the rules of the event, late entries may be accepted at the discretion of the America’s Cup organizers.

Alex Thomson announced that he will be building a new 60-foot IMOCA for the 2016 Vendée Globe. The monohull designed by VPLP-Verdier is likely to be built at Green Marine. She is due to be launched in the summer of 2015, in order to enable Alex Thomson to compete in the Transat Jacques Vabre, and to achieve his main goal of attempting to win the 2016 Vendee Globe. Whilst the IMOCA class has made a number of rule changes to reduce the costs of the class, the investment is still upwards of €3million. The Alex Thomson Racing Team have been sponsored by Hugo Boss since 2003 and have secured continued sponsor- ship until 2018. The Team has chosen Guil- laume Verdier and the VPLP Team to design the new Hugo Boss. Technical Lead from Alex Thomson Racing, Ross Daniel said “To date we have had an incredible experience with working together with Guillaume and Vincent at VPLP/Verdier. These guys are incredibly down to earth, extremely talent- ed, and have a passion for creating winning IMOCA boats.” Aware of the importance of delivering the project on time and on budget, the team understands the signifi cance of having the right project manager and the right builder to lead the project. The Team are currently in negotiations with Hythe based Green Marine to complete the build. Simon Mc- Goldrick, the Team’s Naval Architect said “We hope and believe that the team at Green Marine are the right partner for this project, they are experienced and capable in building custom composites on time and on budget. Given the choice we would always chose to build the boat in the UK as we are a British Team and want to support the industry and local suppliers that we rely on day to day”. With or without foils?
Concerning the design features to be found on the new monohull, McGoldrick added, “This Vendèe Globe cycle will be particularly exciting as we will almost cer- tainly see the use of foils not too dissimilar to those used in the Americas Cup. The foils should signifi cantly increase the per- formance of the boats, an increase we have not seen since the canting keel was invented.
Today all the simulations are theory based and of course theory can be very different to reality, so it is going to be a fascinating next 12 months to see what emerges.” The boat will be launched in summer 2015, with the objective to be race ready to compete in the Transat Jacques Vabre. The believes it is crucial to ensure the build is in phase with the competition. There are four new boats that have already been an- nounced- Safran, Banque Populaire, Groupe Edmond de Rothschild and Saint-Mi- chel-Virbac. Stuart Hosford, CEO, We want to take advantage of the very latest design thinking, but also get the boat in the water early enough to ensure reliability. We have a simple objective and that is to put Alex Thomson on the start line, with a boat that is as good, if not better, than all the other boats that will line up on the Ocean Masters circuit”
In the meantime, Alex Thomson is pre- paring to take on the Barcelona World Race on December 31st
together with co-skipper
Pepe Ribes. Alex’s perspective: “We have worked hard to put together the right com- bination to make a successful project. We feel that we have put ourselves in-phase with the right designers and the right team internally and externally to be fully compet- itive through this cycle. I feel honored and privileged to have this opportunity – I can’t wait!”
