the position where she struck, 100 yards from the shore, but the terrifi c pounding she received in the gales dislodged her and drove the vessel so far inshore that when the undertow leaves her, her bow is aground. The crew has stuck to the steamer and for some time their position was perilous, but now it will be possible for them to make a landing with little diffi culty. Numerous small fi shing boats on the north side of Prince Edward Island were broken up during the gale Sunday night. On land, telegraph and telephone poles and wires throughout the Maritime Provinces were blown down and it was not until Monday that communication began to be restored. From many remote points no word has yet been received, and it is feared that when all is learned, still further disasters may be recorded. A furious hurricane has raged along the coast of Newfoundland for the past two days. An immense amount of damage has been done to shipping and fi shing interests and the railroads and steamboat service have been suspended. The main boats CARTHAGINIAN of the Allan line, and the LOUISBURG of the Diamond line, have been detained in port 36 hours. It is feared that many vessels along the coast have met with disaster.

Frank W. Earle’s Friends are Anxious He Left Bangor October 21 on the Sloop Yacht GOLDEN ROD for Stockton and Isle au Haut Hasn’t Been Hear From The friends of Frank W. Earle of this city are considerably alarmed as to his present whereabouts and are wondering what has become of him. He left Bangor, Sunday, October 21, together with Willard Smith of Orrington, for a fi shing trip to Stockton and Isle au Haut, and has not been heard of since. While they do not think any harm has come to him, they are naturally getting anxious over his present whereabouts.

When he left Bangor two weeks ago last Sunday he said that he was only going to be gone three or four days and expected to be home at the expiration of that time. He left Bangor on his 30-foot sloop about noon of that day and was to take on Smith at Orrington and then continue on to Stockton. He expected to reach that place that evening. The two men were planning on doing a

little fi shing at Isle au Haut and at the same time Mr. Earle was planning on visiting parties at Stockton and Eggemoggin Reach to see if he could sell the sloop.

It has been now over two weeks since the two men started out and as Mr. Earle stated that he intended to be gone only a few days considerable anxiety is felt. Both men have had considerable experience with sailing craft

and it is not thought probable that the craft has been lost. Earle is about 35 or 36 years of age and is very tall, while his companion is a man of 55 or 56 years and has been a fi sherman for many years.

The GOLDEN ROD which was the name of the sloop the two men sailed in is about 30 feet in length and of about nine tons register. She is painted white, has a cabin and is a trim craft.

7 November 1906 The CROSBY Sold.

The wrecked four-masted Bath schooner HELEN B. CROSBY was sold at auction in Rockland Monday by Captain Wallace to A. J. Bird for $1,000. The cargo of coal was sold to the same party for $2.50. The Rockland Star says: “The sale advertised to take place on the Court House steps was adjourned to the grand jury room. About 50 were present and bidding on the schooner was brisk. The bidding stated at $200. The coal was not looked upon as a likely proposition and the fi rst bid offered was ten cents. W. H. Simmons acted as auctioneer. The chief value of the wreck as it now lies is in the four masts, which are still standing, the other spars, and a steam windless. The sails, rigging and other material had previously been stripped by Boston wreckers, who tried two weeks ago to fl oat the schooner.

The PICKERING Ashore. The steamer VINALHAVEN Monday reported the schooner SUSAN N. PICKERING ashore on Shag Rock near Crotch Island. The schooner was loaded with granite and bound from Stonington to New York. She went ashore Saturday noon and it was at fi rst supposed she would fl oat on the next tide. It will be necessary to lighten the schooner before she can be fl oated, but it is not thought she is seriously damaged. The SUSAN N. PICKERING is 336 gross tons and 319 net tons. Length 135 feet, breadth 32 feet, depth 10.8 feet. She was built in 1882 in Belfast and the home port is Deer Isle. The schooner is commanded by Capt. Haskell of Deer Isle and carries a crew of six men.

The well-known ship C. F. SARGENT arrived in New York, October 25, after a passage of 150 days from San Francisco. It is not unlikely that the vessel may be sold for a coal barge.
