Millennium Marine in Eastport

opened last April and has survived a fi re and presently has four boats under construction. The fi re occurred on 23 July. It started during the middle of the night and was not

discovered until the fi rst person arrived that morning. Fortunately the sprinkler system activated, but it did not initiate an alarm. So for a number of hours the sprinkler sprayed water, stopped the fi re, but fi lled the boats with water. One boat suffered fi re damage and the other had so much water inside that the weight forced the jack-stands up through the hull. Most of the damage was due to the soot and they lost some material and tools. Fortunately they were back up and running a week later.

They have two Donnell 43s underway.

One is being fi nished off as a herring/lob- ster boat for a customer from Stone Haven, New Brunswick. She will be powered with a 600-hp Cummins. The other is also being fi nished out as a lobster boat for a fi sherman from New Brunswick. She will be going out as a kit boat. A Millennium 45 was just getting ready to come out of the mould. She will be fi nished out as a lobster/herring boat for a fi sherman from New Brunswick. She is being shipped out as a kit boat. A 52 is being fi nished off for Dungeness

crab fi shing in Washington. They are just starting to lay this one up. This is replacing one of the boats damaged in the fi re. Also needing to be laid up is a Donnell 35. She will be shipped out as a kit boat.

MASSACHUSETTS Crocker’s Boat Yard in Manchester- by-the-Sea is in the midst of their hauling season and has just completed a rebuild on a Crocker schooner. She was started in Janu- ary and they replaced the stem, rudder, eight frames, some planks, some of the deadwood, replaced some of the keel bolts, raised the mainmast nine inches, added bimini to main boom, replaced the standing and running rigging, overhauled the engine, and paint

and varnish. The new sails were made by Nat Wilson of East Boothbay. She formerly had double head sails, but this has been changed to one big club footed foresail.

Now coming in is a Concordia 39, which will be receiving a new deadwood. The yard now stores fi ve Concordias, four 39s and one 41. The 41 will be refas- tened this winter. There are fi ve boats from the yard heading south this winter and two of them will have new electronic packages installed before they depart.

In mid-August they started their hauling season, which will extend to Christmas. Up at their yard in Essex they added another 8,000 square feet of space, which is in a fabric building. They will now be able to store about 100 boats at this facility.

Gloucester Marine Railways in Gloucester has just relaunched the schoo- ner ROSEWAY. Her big job this time was caulking, which was done by a group from Maine.
