penalty fees would have exceeded the cost of the equipment itself so the customer decided to transport the cargo by air in order to meet their deadline and avoid big losses.

Fayçal: Some of the latest examples are moves from the U.S. into Iraq, such as two An-124 fl ights moving a Slug Catcher for the Majnoon Oil Site. We are currently operating a number of An-124 fl ights into Africa and the Far East to provide customers with urgently-needed equipment. Most fl ights originate from Europe and the US. Our colleagues in Ulyanovsk, Russia, have organised a series of IL-76TD-90VD fl ights for a major O&G vendor in Malaysia.

Alexander: Organising ‘door-to-door’ services for energy cargo is extremely important as the customer would like to have one contact throughout the whole shipment from beginning to end. They have concerns about the transition of liability where different parties are in charge of different areas of work, so contracting through ‘one window’ is a preferable option for them.

Vladimir: You only have to look at the statistics. Since Volga-Dnepr’s Engineering and Logistics Centre was established in 2009, the number of ELC requests has been increasing every year for airport handling, trucking, insurance, construction of special loading and offl oading

equipment, as well as building frames, cradles and pedestals for heavy cargoes.

Fayçal: It is key to understand fi rst of all why it is important and the reason for this development. The importance is refl ected in being a one-stop-shop service provider and not just an airline operating a fl eet of unique aircraft models. Again, I want to highlight the expertise linked to our fl eet in terms of our teams worldwide and their capability to offer engineering and logistics services. The people working for the company have fi rst hand knowledge of both the fl eet and the customer, so it is easier to create that logistics link and offer these important ancillary services. The ELC service is offered throughout the company and in each region. To our customers it means that they have immediate access to vital technical information allowing them to plan, cost quantify and troubleshoot existing and upcoming projects and achieve a fast response for emergency fl ights. This refl ects our commitment to long term, strategic partnerships with our customers.

What is the most unusual/extr ener

managed?

Maxim: We moved a shipment from Hungary to Germany that involved using a scheduled AirBridgeCargo Airlines’ fl ight from Frankfurt to Incheon Airport in South Korea, organising trucking from the airport to Pusan seaport –and then the seafreight movement from Pusan seaport to Korsakov seaport in Russia. The customer confi rmed the transportation 48 hours prior to the scheduled fl ight

from Frankfurt. The collection of the cargo from Budapest was arranged and it was quickly trucked to Frankfurt. This particular shipment was equipped with tilt sensors, which require special handling during transportation, especially during sea shipping.

Fayçal: Most of the cargo we ship could be considered unusual or extreme. One example that comes to mind is the so- called Xmas tree. The Xmas tree is an assembly of spools, valves, and gauges put on well heads for water fl ow/injection/ pressurisation when drilling. The name is derived from its crude resemblance to a Christmas tree. One of the manufacturers made a subsea Xmas tree only to fi nd out it was not loadable. Our engineering team worked with the customer to re-design and manufacture the supporting metal frame so it could be carried onboard an An-124.

This type of unusual situation refl ects the need our customers have for our case-by-case creative engineering capabilities. Unusual or special loads do not necessarily mean an extremely heavy weight. Sometimes it is the shape and technical specifi cation of the shipment that make the cargo unique.

What tr ends ar e you noticing in terms of customer enquiries?

Fayçal: Customers are always looking for one-stop-shop services, and high and reliable service levels that ensure all of the information they need is available. The speed with which information is released is becoming more and more important: an accurate, immediate and transparent fl ow of information is key in today’s world.
