ENERGY/OIL & GAS FOCUS
ENERGY EXPERTS
Volga-Dnepr Airlines’ and Ruslan International’s energy and oil & gas specialists around the world talk about the industry’s unique transport and logistics requirements
Why is the An-124 such a vital air ener
gy/oil and gas car goes?
Fayçal: The unique characteristics of both the An-124 and IL-76TD-90VD provide an opportunity to move bulky and heavy cargo which exceeds the parameters set by the standard wide to mid-size body cargo airplanes such as the B747 freighter and others. This is in terms of volume/ weight as well as geographical reach. The expertise of our operational and engineering experts in terms of organising fl ights, handling cargo and assisting customers in the energy/O&G sector is vast and ever-growing. It is the experts in our company that take the technical
craft for capabilities of our fl eet to the next level.
Graham: A signifi cant amount of cargoes requested for carriage are outsized – that is not compatible with other aircraft types such as B747 etc. Whilst in some instances a shipper could break the cargo down into smaller items, the time saved by shipping as a ‘ready-to-plant’ unit can be a signifi cant advantage to reduce production downtime. It is also worth considering that in certain regions, local infrastructure is limited and with the An-124’s self- suffi ciency it can reach locations other aircraft types cannot.
Pavel: The An-124 can be used to transport heavy and oversized equipment such as turbines, power packs, transformers, separators, BOPs, tubing reel skids, and various pieces of equipment built in 20- 40-foot containers. Most of this equipment would not be able to load into a Boeing 747F, so even if there is a scheduled freighter service available to the required destination, it won’t help you much.
With a payload of up to 120 tons and the An-124’s 640x440cm cargo door you can load large equipment and more weight so equipment that is urgently required on-site can be moved on a single fl ight and within the required timeframe, eliminating any negative impact on the production schedule.
What types of ener gy/O&G car goes ar better suited to the IL-76TD-90VD?
Fayçal: The IL-76TD-90VD is often referred to as the An-124’s little brother, whilst still offering a similar range to the An-124. The aircraft is ideal for handling containerised and wheeled equipment. The military regular use the aircraft to move and relocate wheeled vehicles and the same applies to Energy and O&G customers.
Pavel: In many cases the outsized cargoes you will be able to load into an IL-76 will be also loadable into a Boeing 747F and can be potentially fl own on a scheduled service. However, when you need cargo to
