Vessel owner transitions into turnkey project contractor
Projects undertaken recently by contractors such as MPI Offshore highlight the growing role vessel owners are assuming as turnkey contractors, responsible for construction management, engineering and transportation and installation
LATE summer saw no fewer than three installation vessels from a single company – MPI Offshore – all working together on different aspects of the Humber Gateway project in the UK. At the time of writing, all three of MPI Offshore’s turbine installation vessels – MPI Resolution, MPI Adventure and MPI Discovery – were working on the same field, for the same client, but undertaking different roles and providing different services for E.ON on the Humber Gateway project in the UK. After loading in Harland & Wolff’s
Belfast yard, MPI Adventure sailed to the Humber Gateway offshore windfarm with two jackets and a module support
frame (MSF) for the substation for the windfarm, which is due to be installed in the coming weeks by the company (including the subsea pin piles). The vessel was due to return to Hartlepool in the coming months to self-load the two topside modules that make up the substation and return to the field to lift them onto the jacket. At the same time, MPI Discovery was completing installation of monopile foundations and transition pieces on the Humber Gateway project – as of the end of August, the vessel was working on the final sequence of 16 monopiles fabricated by TAG Energy Solutions (see elsewhere in this issue)
and transhipped onto MPI Discovery in the River Tees. Discovery has been installing the 650 tonne monopiles for much of the summer. MPI Resolution was also utilised on the Humber Gateway project for the installation of monopiles after a fast mobilisation from duties on the Northwind project, where the vessel was installing Vestas wind turbine generators. Outfitted with an MPI monopile gripper and self-propelled modular transporters (SPMTs), the vessel supported MPI Discovery for two months of foundation installation work. In July, the vessel returned to the Tees to be reconfigured for wind turbine
