Late August 2014 saw boatbuilder Danish Yachts name the first example of a new, enhanced version of its windfarm support vessel design. The all-carbon fibre, 24m second-generation ‘FOB SWATH’ unit follows on from four first-generation vessels built by the company for client Odfjell Wind (see the feature in the first quarter 2014 issue of OWJ, pages 32-33 for more details). The new vessel, Lina, is due to operate on behalf of E.ON in the German sector of the North Sea, and has accommodation for 24 people, a speed of 24 knots in catamaran mode and range of 1,000nm at 90 per cent MCR.

Speaking exclusively to OWJ, Patrik von Sydow, CEO of Danish Yachts explained that the second-generation unit is 15 per cent lighter than the first four vessels, and has improved fuel efficiency, range speed and stability. A new wheelhouse configuration has also been introduced to enhance operations in open water and when landing against wind turbines. The company also recently began building a 32m SWATH design for a client in the offshore oil and gas sector. This vessel is due to be delivered early in 2015 and will be described in OWJ’s sister journal, Offshore Support Journal, in due course.
