Cyclists honour WWI hero on trip to Ypres

THIRTEEN thirst curry fans are getting on their bikes for the Royal British Legion. To mark the centenary of the start

of WWI, the baker’s dozen from Yalding, Laddingford and Hunton will cycle 50 miles from Yalding to Dover, then another 50 miles on French soil to a campsite in Kem- mel, near Ypres. The aim of the trip is to raise

awareness and money for the RBL’s Poppy Appeal and the team has set up a Just Giving page at www.just- giving.com/Andrew-Perch/ However, they are also taking a

tiny piece ofYalding – a bag of soil – to lay at the Menin Gate in Ypres, close to the name of Albert Masters, from the 10th Hussars. Albert’s name also appears on the

YaldingWar Memorial. Team leader Simon Gardiner from

Symonds Lane, Yalding, said: “Through this act,we aim to bring a small, but poignant sense of re- membrance for all thatwas given by the soldiers in WWI.” He added: “CBCCB is a not very serious group of cyclists who ride around the countryside in search of beer and curry. We decided to set our sights further afield to tackle Eu- rope, and then someone suggested we should do the ride for charity. “The only problem so far is that

we haven’t found a curry restaurant in Ypres, so we might have to take supplies from a local restaurant.”
