this at all. According to the article the exposure to pesticides were as much as 30% less in the organic foods when compared with non-organic. Here is a question for you. If you have two apples side by side and someone told you that one had 30% more pesticides in it than the other, which would you choose?

The one with fewer pesticides!

There is also a growing body of research that is showing that organically produced foods are not only less chemically com- promised but are more nutrient dense. In a food science jour- nal article that appeared in 2011 the authors concluded that, “The micronutrient content of food groups was more frequently reported to be higher for organic vegetables and legumes com- pared to their conventional counterparts.” This improvement in food quality is not only seen in plants but in animal based foods as well. A very well done study compared milk produced organically and milk produced conventionally. The fatty acid ratios in the organically produced milk were much better than that of the milk produced conventionally.

Convinced to go organic yet? Yes? But how do I pay for that stuff? It’s so expensive!

If

you assume that you will be healthier from eating organic then you can calculate how much money you will save in medical bills as you get older. Not buying that? Ok, I will make it easier on you. For the last ten years a non-profit group called Environ- mental Working Group (EWG) has compiled a list of produce with the most pesticide contamination. They get this information from data the US Department of Agriculture has compiled on pesticide residue found on 48 different produce items. They call the worst 12 items the dirty dozen. If you want to eat organic in 2014 on a budget these items should be a first priority. Here is the list; Snap Peas, Potatoes, Cherry Tomatoes, Cucumbers, Nec- tarines, Sweet Bell Peppers, Spinach, Peaches, Celery, Grapes, Strawberries and… the absolute worst.. Apples. There is enough information on this subject that someone can write a book about it if they wanted too. In fact I think many people have. I have attempted to simplify a very complex topic. I didn’t even touch on how challenging it would be for our cur- rent farming system to feed everyone if they had to do every- thing organically. It isn’t so cut and dry. Your health begins and ends with what you feed your body. If at all possible the best food is organic. That is my opinion anyway!!
