As many of you know I have absolutely no use for special interest groups and those that stand at the top of my list are the envi- ronmentalists. I would put them on par with the religious fanatics and other terrorists and they should be treated as such. When they lie to scare people into believing in their causes they should be held accountable. The government has no back-bone and because of this these groups are gaining more and more control and unless the American public wakes up, the damage will be hard to reverse. Now we have the National Resource Council of Maine proud that they stopped the loading of crude and oil sands from being exported from South Portland. They are proud that they probably eliminated over 40 good paying jobs and they are proud that they may have crippled the Port of Portland. For years they have been killing jobs in the State of Maine and proud of it!

Oil sands, also known as tar sands, is a mixture of clay, sand, water and bitumen (heavy black oil). Oil sand is mined, because it is too thick to be pumped by conventional methods. It can also be pumped, but only after heating the sands. To obtain oil from oil sand you need to extract and separate the bitumen from the other materials. This is done at an extraction plant using hot water. The discarded sands are then returned to the mine and reclaimed. Due to the thickness of this oil you need to mix it with other hy- drocarbons in order to pump it through pipe lines. Most of the world’s oil, approximately 2 trillion barrels, is in the form of oil sands. The majority of the oil sands can be found in Canada, in the U. S. in Utah, and the

Middle East. The U. S. does not refi ne oil sands on a signifi cant level at this time. The only countries that do are Canada and Ven- ezuela. The environmental impact are gas emissions, mining of the land and impact on water quality. The only real signifi cant issue is the amount of water needed to process oil sands. However all of the above issues can be made insignifi cant using technology. There was also another group working against the Port of Portland and that is the Tides Foundation, founded by Drummond Pike. Talk about a questionable organiza- tion. It is said that they push the limits of the U. S. tax laws in their pursuit of leftist, activist goals. It is very diffi cult to determine where and how this tax exempt money is used or who donated it. One source says they are more like a money-laundering organiza- tion obtaining funds from other foundations so as to fund questionable anti-consumer groups.

So where is the argument in piping oil sands to South Portland and placing them on board a vessel? All the environmental impacts is in the processing, not piping or loading. It would seem that the offi cials of South Portland caved to the environmental- ists.

If this state wants to create jobs, they need to develop a backbone and fight extremist groups such as the National Re- source Council of Maine. This does not mean sacrifi cing the environment, but using common sense to protect the environment and create or retain jobs. People of Maine need to understand we can have both.
