PRESS [Northern Bay 36; 900+-hp Mack]. They had replaced a heat exchanger the day before the races and she went back over that night. When they ran her they still had a small problem and when that was corrected it was too late to race. A crowd favourite is always Galen
Alley’s FOOLISH PLEASURE but she was back at her mechanic’s shop. THUNDERBOLT was also a no-show. She had broken some teeth on her starter gear before the Moosabec races and was still not race ready. The fi rst races of the day are in the
Work Boat Classes and Stonington ran four of them. In the fi rst race of the day, Class A (Skiffs 16-feet and under with outboards up to 30 hp, Operator 16 years and young- er) there was only one entrant, MAKING KNOTS. In Class B (Inboards, outboards or outdrives, 31 to 60 hp) there were fi ve boats on the line. First over the line was SHIRLEY V. A boat that has been dominate in Class C (Inboards, outboards or outdrives, 61 to 90 hp) has been Marshall Spear’s J-BIRD [16’; 90-hp], and today was no different as he got another win. In Class, D (Inboards, outboards or outdrive 91 hp and up) had four boats come to the line, Richard Quinn’s SEA KING jumped right out into the lead and took the win.
Just three boats came to the line for the
Novi Race. They were AGE QOUD AGIS, DOUGH BOY and SHENANIGANS. When the fl ag dropped AGE QUOD AGIS jumped into the lead and crossed fi rst. One of the most impressive races of the day is the Johns Bay Boat Co. Race. Stonington has more than a dozen John’s Bay built boats, and 10 boats entered in the race. First over the line was the newest boat RESOLUTE, followed by EMMA & ANDREW and Vance Bunker’s SARI ANN [42’ Johns Bay Boat; 660-hp Volvo]. Next up was the Gasoline Classes with just four entrants, all in separate classes, with no one entered in Gasoline Class E. In Class A was DOUBLE TROUBLE; in Class B WIDE OPEN; Class C BLACK DIAMOND and Class D LITTLE GIRLS. It was decided to race them altogether as each would get fi rst in their respective classes. Two of the gasoline racers, LITTLE
GIRLS and WIDE OPEN ran right back down to run in the Wooden Boat Race. Five boats were on the line and it was LITTLE GIRLS taking the win.
Next came the Diesel Classes and fi rst
up was Class A with just two boats entered and the winner was Julie Eaton’s CAT SASS [Repco 30, 210 hp Cummins]. Seven boats were on the line for Class B. The win went to GLORY BOUND, MISS KERI LYNNE second and Jeff Gove’s DOWNEASTER [38’; 210 hp Cummins] third. Six boats were entered in Class C and the win was won by EASY MONEY with David Wiberg’s SAN- DRA DEE [Crowley 28; 315-hp Cummins] second. In Diesel Class D Cory Robertson’s PISCUTTAH II [South Shore 34; 300-hp John Deere] jumped into the lead and won. Seven boats were on the line for Class E and there could be an interesting battle between Ed Shirley’s MISS KARLEE and Sid Ea- ton’s KIMBERLY BELLE [AJ-28; 370-hp Volvo], which was won by MISS KARLEE in a close race. Sixteen boats were signed up in Class F so they were split into two heats and then the two heats would face off in the fi nals. In the fi nals it was all MS. ROSE with SEA MIST back one boat length neck and neck with TSUNAMI and at the line it was SEA MIST. There were just two boats in Class G and SEACOCK took the easy win. Travis Otis’ FIRST TEAM has been the boat to beat in Class H, but today was not going to be his day. TURN THE PAGE just got
by FIRST TEAM for the win. Next up was Diesel Class I and WTF sped up the course for the win over Chris Smith’s MISTY [Crowley Beal 33; 650 hp Scania]. There were 9 boats entered in Class J and again were split the Class and then held a fi nal race. At half way Carl Gross' HEY BABY [Northern Bay 36; 610-hp Volvo] was in the lead and she was not going to relinquish it. JANICE ELAINE took second and Andrew Taylor's BLUE EYED GIRL [Calvin Beal 36, 650-hp Scania] grabbed third. There were fi ve boats entered in Class K and one in Class L and everyone would be watching as Andy Gove’s UNCLE’S UFO in Class K and Cameron Crawford’s WILD WILD WEST in Class L. The win went to UNCLE’S UFO, but not by much. Seven boats were on the line for Diesel Class M and as expected Patrick Faulkingham’s GRAMP’S BIRD took the win. There was only two boats in Diesel Class N and despite having over 30 people on board the win went to Brent Ol- iver’s JARSULAN IV [Wesmac 46; 1000 hp Caterpillar] over Jeff Libby’s AUTUMN GAIL [Dixon 48, 825-hp Detroit]. In the Gasoline Free-for-All it was all LITTLE GIRLS followed by WIDE OPEN. In the Diesel Free-for-All WTF was going to be hard to get by and no one did. UNCLE’S UFO took second and WILD WILD WEST third.
This race was followed by the Boat-
builder’s Exhibition Class, which was won by MISTY, followed over by FIRST TEAM. Like the Moosabec races, Stonington separates out the working and recreational lobster boats for the title of the Fastest Work- ing Lobster Boat, known as the Jimmy Ste- vens Cup. The given was UNCLE’S UFO being fi rst over the line, so the battle would be for second which went to LISA MARIE. Now came the fi nal race of the day,
Stonington’s Fastest Lobstah Boat Afl oat. As they came up the course LITTLE GIRLS had the lead on the Stonington side of the course with WTF right on her transom and gaining. At midway it was still LITTLE GIRLS but WTF was back just half a boat length. When they neared the fi nish line WTF slipped into the lead in the closest race of the day. Third was WILD WILD WEST with UNCLE’S UFO fourth. The last big winner of the day, was Derrick Beal of Jonesport, owner of MISS BADONKADONK, who won the Carolina Skiff and engine. With the Harpswell Races canceled we have lost three points races, Friendship and Searsport and Harpswell. This created a problem for a number of racers who were counting on Harpswell for points. The Ex- ecutive Committee noted the problem and asked the race organizers of Long Island if they would like to be a points race. They were more than pleased and this will make the last race weekend of the racing season even more important. Also remember there will be 100 gallons of diesel fuel raffl ed off in each of the Diesel Classes at the MS Lobster Boat Races the following day (17 August). So the next race will be Winter Harbor
on 9 August and this could rival Stonington for numbers as they are celebrating their 50th anniversary. There are always great prizes and the racing could go to a whole other level!
