SOUTHWEST HARBOR – When the lob- ster boat races were canceled at Searsport this allowed me to jump on board Ralph Stanley’s SEVEN GIRLS and photograph the Friendship Sloop Races in Southwest Harbor on 12 July. It was a beautiful day, bright sunshine and temperatures on the mainland over 80, but not out on the water. There were twelve boats entered and the start took place at 1 o’clock. The rac- ers headed out the west side of Greenings Island to a buoy off Cranberry Isle, back in to a buoy at the entrance to Somes Sound,

then out to a mark south of Baker’s Island and back to the fi nish off Greenings Island. The interesting aspect of the race was on the second leg to the buoy at the entrance to Somes sound. The choice was whether you go on the east or west side of the island. The east side was shorter, but there was a prob- lem with less wind and a tide running out. Those that choose the west side took the lead as the others struggled. HELEN BROOKS had been in the lead, but she dropped deep in the fl eet at the Somes Sound mark. She did manage to gain back the lost time on the next legs and sailed on for the win.
