GREAT GARDENS TO VISIT THIS MONTH


Kilsyth Gardens, Kilsyth, Glasgow Aeolia is the garden of Mr and Mrs G Murdoch. Developed since 1960 with mature specimen trees, shrubs and a huge variety of plants. Blackmill is across the road from Aeolia and is owned by Mr and Mrs Alan Patrick. With specimen trees and shrubs, a woodland glen, a pond and rock pool built into the remains of an old mill building. Paths along Garrel Burn with views to the cascading waterfalls. Open 3 August


Perennial favourite


Perennial, the charity formerly known as the Gardeners’ Royal Benevolent Fund scooped a gold medal and a ‘best in show’ prize at the Gardening Scotland exhibition for its show garden, which was designed by husband-and-wife team Martin Crowley and Amber Goudy. To mark its 175th anniversary, Perennial is trying to raise £175,000 to help horticulturists in need. Crowley, who lives near Oban, received help from the charity after suffering from a serious illness. www.perennial.org.uk


Castleview, Auchindoun, Dufftown A small secluded riverside garden created on three levels from scrub land by two enthusiastic beginners in 2005. Consisting of two interconnected ponds and herbaceous plants and shrubs with several sitting areas. Open 3 August


Crofts, Kirkpatrick Durham, Kirkcudbrightshire


A Victorian garden with mature trees, a walled garden with fruit and vegetables and glass houses, hydrangea garden and a water garden. All with a tranquil woodland walk with stream. Open 10 August


Thorntree, Arnprior, Stirlingshire Charming country garden with fl ower beds around a courtyard. Apple walk, Saltire garden and new mecanopsis bed. Lovely views from Ben Lomond to Ben Ledi. Open 20 August


Orchid excitement


The Taiwan Floriculture Exports Association is exhibiting orchids at the Royal Botanic Garden Edinburgh until 20 July. A series of events are being held to accompany the exhibition, including Chinese fl ower painting, face painting and a tea ceremony. The exhibition is free. www.rbge.org.uk

The Pineapple, nr Airth, Stirlingshire Exotic fruits were once grown at this folly, but it’s now an oasis for wildlife including the rare great crested newt - with a dipping pool, an apple orchard and picnic grounds. Open 31 August
