When should I plan my Exit Strategy?

An exit strategy is normally the last thing on a company owners mind but does it really have to be such a last minute decision?

I refer to it as last minute decision as on average company owners spend 30 years building their business but only 1 – 3 years deciding on an exit strategy. Such a huge decision but only a year of thoughts, work and strategy for probably the largest transaction of your life.

Having an exit strategy at the back of your mind is not only healthy, it is important. This exit strategy is the last chance to go out on a high with your business. It is your last deal to close and it is what you are going to enjoy for many years to come!

An exit strategy should be in your mind and your business plan.

The factors worth keeping in mind when planning an exit strategy is the bottom-line, it is imperative to spend at least 3 years working on maintaining a steady but growing Net profit. The bottom-line or EBITDA is what the buyer will base their offer on and so any £ or $ you can add will be worth between £/$5 – £/$10 upon exit. Planning ahead is critical, ideally the best 3 years of your business career should be prior to the sale date…. Don’t leave your exit to the last minute, plan ahead and reap the rewards for years to come!
