News Ancientwall wrecked by yobs

VANDALS have destroyed an his- toric wall in the Loose Valley – just weeks after the land was taken over by the community. Volunteers from the Valley Con-

servation Society had been repair- ing the ragstone wall, which dates back to the 1800s – after moneywas raised, with the help of community groups including Tovil Parish Council, to secure the land from de- velopment. Thewall, which runs from Lower Crisbrook Pond to Hayle Park Nature Reserve, serves as the

repairs to the wall, only to find thugs have managed to wreck this part of the wall completely. “If that wasn't enough, they car-

said: “Our work party has spent weeks carrying out much-needed

Village school improves

THE new head at Ulcombe C of E Primary School has been praised for raising standards at the village school, following an inspection by Ofsted. The school had been told it

“required improvement” after a previous visit. But, in its latest re- port, inspectors found the appoint- ment of Emma Hickling as executive head last November was having a positive impact. “Pupils are now making much

more rapid progress, particularly in mathematics and reading,” the re- port noted. “Many of the pupils, particularly the older children, are making accelerated progress and are making up the ground lost by previously poor teaching.” Ms Hickling thanked staff, pupils,

parents and governors and said: “We acknowledge we still have areas to improve and are working hard to ensure these improve at the same rate.”

ried on the vandalism to other parts of the wall further along. We are very disappointed to report this wilful vandalism on a scale that the VCS has never encountered be- fore.”

Three teenage girls and a boy

were reported to be throwing stones near the collapsed wall and were last seen walking along the footpath towards Forest Hill.

Mr Usmar said: “We would ask

the public to be vigilant when walking or enjoying the Loose Val- ley Conservation Area and other areas of Maidstone and report any sightings of wilful damage to either the police or the VCS directly. “We need to make the public

aware of the value of our industrial, architectural heritage and ask that they respect and care for our local environment. We will be relaying this message to the many young- sters who already enjoy working with us from local schools.”

Surgery may be demolished

A FRESH housing proposal to re- place a doctors’ surgery in Head- corn has been submitted. In December 2013, planning per- missionwas granted to convert the former surgery on the junction of Clerks Field and Forge Lane into five one-bed flats. Now developer Clarendon Homes has applied to demolish the building, which has become re- dundant after the surgery moved to Grigg Lane, and replace it with four semi-detached houses. A supporting statement said: “The site is located on a prominent

corner but offers no great contri- bution to the appearance of the area.

“The edges of the site are pre- dominantly open and grassed with no particular features to distinguish public and private space. “Anew low level picket fence to

the front perimeter will create a soft definition which will be en- hanced with planting and orna- mental trees to improve the streetscape.” Maidstone Council will deter- mine the planning application.
