Immediately after the collision, the SAPPHO sounded four signals of danger which were responded to by the gasoline launch ERMINNIE, owned by S. L. Carpenter of Boston, and commanded by Capt. Otis Albee of Swan’s island. The launch also had on board Walter Gilman Page of Boston, the artist, and F. Gould of Baltimore, who are stopping at Atlantic. They towed in the tender.
The unfortunate victim of the accident
Mr. Liscomb, was a worthy young man whose death will be a sever blow to many friends and relatives.

Admiral Bradford reached the age limit last Sunday but had been waiting his retiring orders before giving up the command of the fl eet and leaving the service. The usual exercises were held on the fl eet and when Admiral Bradford left the fl agship MINNEAPOLIS the admiral’s salute of 13 guns was fi red. The cruiser DES MOINES left Saturday morning for New London while the DENVER was at Lamoine Saturday for coal. Mrs. Robert F. Capt. Norton in speaking of the accident said that the SAPPHO would have cleared the sloop by six or eight feet except that one of the fi shermen becoming frightened
backed water, bringing the sloop and the tow together and stopping their headway. He then attempted to stop the SAPPHO but the distance was too short.
7 August 1906 Nine Days’ Trip in a Dense Fog Capt. Mitchell of Machias Mad Ill by Harrowing Experience. Had But One Man For a Crew
Could Take No Observations and His Compass Went Wrong – His Vessel was Stranded Once.
Machias, August 7. Capt. Augustus Mitchell of the little two-masted schooner FILLMORE, is seriously ill here as a result of a harrowing nine days’ experience in the fog. From that day until noon Monday the fog shut them in a little world by themselves. Neither whistle, bell nor any other signs of human life could be heard. There was no chance for taking observations and to add to the diffi culty the compass had gone wrong. Reckoning, therefore, merely on the speed of his vessel, Capt. Mitchell on Monday thought he must be off Machias and hauled his vessel to await for the fog to lift suffi ciently for him to enter the harbor. At noon on Monday the fog lifted slightly and Capt. Mitchell thought he could see the dim outline of Grand Manan. Feeling relieved at thus “fi nding himself,” Capt. Mitchell who was a sick man turned into snatch a few moments of rest. Mr. Reed was left on deck to keep a sharp lookout for a rift in the fog which had again shut in and for passing craft. At midnight the little boat was caught in the huge breakers and piled high on the beach. Launching their dory with diffi culty the two men succeeded in reaching shore and spent the night in the woods. At daybreak Tuesday Mr. Reed started in search of medical aid for his captain and to get information as to their whereabouts. He learned that he was in the vicinity of Sunday Cove, Digby, N. S. Medical aid was procured for Capt. Mitchell. The stranded vessel was repaired and on Thursday Capt. Mitchell with Mr. Reed again started for Machias, despite the fog and arrived here Monday. Capt. Mitchell was taken to his home in a greatly exhausted condition. * * * * *
