Portsmouth’s visitor economy continues to expand. Tourism South East data shows that in recent years, the number of visitors rose by 7%, and the amount they spent by 14%.


The number of jobs supported by the visitor economy increased by 15% to 11,675, and tourism was estimated to be worth £557,598,000 to city businesses.


A total of 65% of tourism spend is coming from day visitors – a report by the Blue Sail tourism consultancy indicates that since 2005 the number of day visits has increased by 15%.


The new Mary Rose Museum and new attractions at the National Museum of the Royal Navy no doubt help these figures, and are impressive additions to other world-class attractions such as HMS Victory, HMS Warrior the Spinnaker Tower and Gunwharf Quays.


An 80-bedroom Premier Inn is due to open in the city centre soon, and there are plans afoot for new hotels – the most advanced being

The new Mary Rose Museum and HMS Victory


for a four-star Village Urban Resort at the Lakeside North Harbour business park. Proposals also include a Jury’s Inn in the city centre, a second Travelodge in the city centre, and one of the first UK sites for the new Urban Villa aparthotel chain.


The planned development of existing hotels includes the redevelopment of the Queens Hotel in Southsea as a smaller boutique hotel with residential apartments, as well as the expansion of the Ibis in central Portsmouth to add another 40 bedrooms.
