Yoga Teachers from Around the World Unite in Austin June 5-8

he International Association of Yoga Therapists (IAYT) presents its annual Symposium on Yoga Therapy and Research (SYTAR) from June 5 to 8 at the Austin Renaissance Hotel. A professional association


for yoga teachers and therapists worldwide, IAYT’s mission is to establish yoga as a recognized and respected therapy. The symposium welcomes yoga teachers and experienced practitioners, including those considering training in yoga therapy. Keynote speaker Lorenzo Cohen,


Ph.D, of MD Anderson in Houston, will describe his team’s research on the integration of yoga into cancer care. Other speakers include Nydia Darby from San Antonio, who owns Nydia’s Yoga Therapy Studio at 4680 Lockhill Selma, and Austinites Peggy Kelly and Charles MacInerney. The event features more than 40 presenters from around the world, including India, Japan and New Zealand. After the SYTAR conference,


on June 9, four one-day workshops will be available: the Dean Ornish program led by Susi Amendola, strategies in cancer treatment with Jnani Chapman, healing relationships led by Nischala Joy Devi and iRest with Richard Miller.


IAYT publishes the International Journal of Yoga Therapy and Yoga Therapy Today. The goal is for local residents to join together and lose 1 million pounds by year’s end. Mayor Julian Castro announced the challenge on March 4. Participation is easy and fun! www.FitcitySA.com and create a profile and share the amount of weight you lose throughout the year. It’s a great way to set a personal weight-loss goal and track your progress throughout the year. The pounds you lose are added to the citywide million pound goal. As of mid April, the challenge had more than 2,200 participants and the total weight-loss tally was more than 85,000 pounds. he three-day San Antonio Summer Art & Jazz Festival arrives the last Friday in May, bringing at least a dozen jazz concerts, an arts and crafts fair and


delicious Texas cuisine to Crockett Park. The free annual event educates participants about the unique and creative genre of jazz music. The event kicks off Friday, May 30, at 5 p.m. with a performance by the U.S. Army Jazz Band. The festival includes free jazz workshops and arts and


crafts classes. The jazz workshops are aimed at young student musicians in middle school and high school.
