What a month. The last issue was com- pleted at a Hilton Hotel in New York City. This was my fi rst formal visit there and it was not too bad. I was there so Ann could learn more about heart valves at Columbia Presbyterian Hospital as she is heading a clinic for them at Eastern Maine Medical Centre. I could not get two articles done before I left, so once in New York I did the transcription, which took Sunday evening and all day Monday to fi nish and then write the articles, which was fi nally fi nished Tues- day morning. One morning I headed down to the nearest restaurant for pancakes, which was the most expense pancake I ever ate. Do not worry I quickly found an alternative that was more affordable.

Of course once done the fi rst thing I

books they had. There were some interesting sights on the way there. Who thought Dave Marcino of Gloucester, MA from the reality TV show “Wicked Tuna” would be lit up in a 100-foot billboard in Times Square? The walk was pretty interesting but there was a little misinformation from a police offi cer, but I made it. They had several hundred ma- rine books, but they were all pretty common. Then I headed up to the rare room and boy that could have made me real poor. Ann was proud that she navigated the

subway her fi rst day, but the second day she took a three-hour tour. Then she wanted to go to “Phantom of the Opera,” not my kind of thing, but it was certainly interesting how that all goes together. Where were the boats?

My other visit to New York was when I arrived there on board USS WINSTON S. CHURCHILL (DDG-81). One of my most memorable times covering a story. This destroyer was impressive as was the offi cers and crew. It was an experience I will never forget. It also showed me the concern there was for a terrorist attack. As we headed for our berth at Staten Island men stood around the deck armed with M60s and ready for an issue. Having read numerous books on World War II and one thing vessels heading into NYC did at that time was monitor the bridges. It would be relatively easy to drop a bomb from one them onto a vessel below. They did keep an eye turned upward as we went under the bridges.

Then it was back home for the Maine

Fishermen’s Forum with Maine Built Boats. I set up Thursday afternoon and then stayed for the fi sh dinner, which was great and will not miss that again. The turn-out for the two day event was great and it was thought that it might have been the star of the “Deadliest Catch” or just the fact winter has been way too long and people wanted to get out. After two weeks on the road doing distribution, collecting news and taking photographs it was time to get ready for the Maine Boatbuilder’s Show. There are a lot of people who love this show because it is different. The fall shows had shown a great upturn. The numbers were down slightly, but those I talked with were really pleased with the quality of the people there. I also met a guy from San Antonio, TX, who came up just for the show.

Now with the shows done we wait for spring, which should be here about July!
