rigging, boom, rudder and keelframe are all built from carbon. Brooklin Boat Yard’s team has begun planking the hull. The carbon fi ber keel frame was built at nearby Front Street Shipyard in Belfast, Maine, and delivered to Brooklin Boat Yard in early February. Updates on the boat’s construction are available on Brooklin Boat Yard’s website at brooklinboatyard.com and on the compa- ny’s Facebook page.

John Williams, Boatbuilder in Hall Quarry is just completing work on the lobster boat STARBURST, a MDI 45. She was in for cosmetic and repair work. They rebuilt the pilot house and then gel coated it. They also modifi ed the hauler, changed her back to wet exhaust, and then inspected the drivetrain. Once this was completed, she was Awlgripped. A Bunker & Ellis 42 was in for varnish

and paint. Two Stanley 36s are in the shop. One is having sides and a back added to the pilot house. They are also reorganizing the stor- age space in the hanging lockers and galley in one. A Duffy 35 is having her galley modi-

If that is not enough, there is plenty of varnish work yet to do. Another boat is having a new windlass and modifying the bow pulpit.

Next in will be a Cobscook 25 for Awl- grip and varnish.

No wonder The Hinckley Company of Manset is throwing a party on the opening night of the Palm Beach Boat Show, it’s got lots to celebrate. New boat sales topped the $15m mark to make the fi rst quarter of 2014 the best one yet in the company’s 86 year his- tory. Sales are 65% ahead of the same period last year and in 2013, Hinckley doubled the number of units sold in 2010. Where Hinck- leys are built, Trenton, the employment rate is booming since Hinckley has gone from its nadir of 35 employees in the dark days of 2009 to a robust manufacturing staff of 220 today. stands at 525 employees, nearly twice what it was fi ve years ago. “We are thrilled with this success, and throughout it we remain vigilant about delivering the same high level of customer service and satisfaction that sustains the Hinckley brand,” said president and CEO Jim McManus.

At the Palm Beach Boat Show Hinckley featured a new boat display on Ramp 9, a display of brokerage boats on Ramp 7, and a service booth promoting its Stuart and Naples service operations in the USSA tent, booth 913. Hinckley’s service operations in Florida have more than doubled in three years and the company will open its fi rst indoor storage facility on the Gulf Coast this season. “We are looking ahead to a really

exciting year,” McManus reports, “in the next three months we will launch a new powerboat model, the Talaria 43, of which eight are sold before the fi rst boat has been launched. We will begin construction of a new sailboat design, the Bermuda 50, we celebrate 20 years of the Picnic Boat and we will see the publishing of a coffee table book on the company by Rizzoli.” Scout Partners, the investment partner- ship of David Howe and former US Sec- retary of Commerce Pete Peterson, which owns Hinckley, also acquired Hunt Yachts in 2013. Hunt Yachts is exhibiting at the Palm Beach Boat Show and will introduce a new 25 foot Harrier Sport at the show.

Ellis Boat Company in Manset has a new 36 foot express cruiser under construc- tion. Presently the top is on and they are working on installing her systems and galley area. Her engine, a 530 hp Yanmar diesel, is in. She will have teak fl oors in and out, a teak transom, custom seating and is scheduled to be done and launched this summer. A 36 Ellis, which was fi nished off as a simple lobster yacht in 1999, is in for a complete refi t. She will be painted inside and out, redo the teak, add some woodwork, add a separate shower, add some shelving, add a headliner with teak trim and a new rudder. She will also get all new electronics. She was purchased last year and they did a few things on the owner’s list and this year they will fi nish up the project. A 24 foot Ellis, built in the 1980s, is in

for a refi t. Everything has been stripped off, fuel tanks have been removed and a new one installed, added twin Yamaha outboards,

added a head in the console and a new teak deck. This owner is thinking of may be going bigger in the future.

There is a lot of service work to do in their two storage buildings, which will keep them busy right into the summer. They are also thinking of adding another storage building soon.

West Bay Boats in Steuben is working on a 30 foot C&C sailboat. She is in for keel bolts, replace fuel tanks and lines, rewire,

and then buff and wax the hull. She will be sent to Connecticut the end of March or early April. A Crowley Beal 23 was fi nished out as

a sport fi shermen and sent to Connecticut. They added a V-berth, wiring, livewell , and a 150 hp Mercury outboard. Some of the detailing was left for the owner to fi nish. The 38 footer GINNY ANN is in for cosmetic work and her regular annual main- tenance. She will be ready for spring.
