The steamers went together shortly after midnight. The CITY OF BANGOR was accompanied here by the steamer CALVIN AUSTIN of the International division, which was bound from St. John, N. B., to this city and Boston. Her freight was transferred at once to the CALVIN AUSTIN. Information of the accident was withheld at the local offi ces.
Boston, June 7. – At the offi ces of the Eastern S. S. Co. in this city it was stated Thursday that the company had received information to the effect that the steamers CITY OF BANGOR, westbound and CITY OF ROCKLAND eastbound had, collided during a dense fog off Portland early Thursday. The company offi cials had been advised from Portland, where the CITY OF BANGOR put in, that the BANGOR’s stem was twisted, but that she was otherwise only slightly damaged. The CITY OF ROCKLAND proceeded to Rockland, apparently undamaged, but the company had not heard directly from that steamer. The CITY OF BANGOR struck the
CITY OF ROCKLAND head on, near the after gangway on the port side. The company’s steamer CALVIN AUSTIN from St. John, N. B., happened to arrive on the scene shortly after the collision and she accompanied the BANGOR into Portland. According to the company’s advices, no one was hurt in the collision. Capt. George A. Curtis, who was in command of the CITY OF BANGOR, refused to make a statement. He has 50 passengers, all of whom were transferred to the CALVIN AUSTIN which left for Boston at 8:30 a.m.
There was no excitement and some of the passengers were unaware of the collision. Temporary repairs will be made here and it is expected the injured steamer will go to Boston Friday. * * * * *
Capt. Roix Tells How Collision Occurred
Both Steamers Turned in the Same Direction to Avoid Each Other – The ROCKLAND Had a Narrow Escape. Rockland, June 7.
The steamer CITY OF ROCKLAND, which was in collision with the CITY OF
BANGOR early Thursday, arrived here at 9 a.m., four hours late. Above the guards for a space of about 40 feet in length the railings of all three decks were carried away and on the main saloon deck fi ve of the state rooms were smashed in. Only one of the rooms happened to be occupied. The occupants, who were two girls belonging to a party of high school students from Aroostook county, who had been visiting in Boston, were no injured. None of the passengers was hurt and there was no panic. Capt. A. A. Roix, who was at the wheel, stated that the collision took place at 12:02 a.m. off Half Way rock, which is between Seguin and Cape Elizabeth. The steamer was about 20 miles outside Portland. Capt. Roix head the BANGOR’s whistle when about three quarters of a mile away and saw her when about half mile distant.
The fog was thick and there was a light northeast wind but with the aid of the full moon he succeeded in making her out and immediately held the wheel apart, swinging out. The offi cers on the CITY OF BANGOR, he said, held his wheel to the starboard and followed. The ROCKLAND was sent along at full speed in order to avert a collision, otherwise the BANGOR probably would have struck her amidships and sunk her. As it was, she received a glancing blow on the port quarter.
There was not much of a jar of the CITY OF ROCKLAND, although persons on any part of the steamer knew at once what had happened.
The ROCKLAND laid by for three hours and 28 minutes and upon being assured the CITY OF BANGOR did not need assistance, resumed her trip. She had a passenger list of 200. She proceeded up the river discharging freight and leaving passengers for this port and will undergo temporary repairs at Bangor before returning to Boston. It is understood the PENOBSCOT will leave Boston in place of the CITY OF BANGOR. * * * * *
