Rural Arkansans to convene at annual conference

Starting May 21 at the Embassy Suites in Rogers, more than 75 state legislators will join more than 500 county judges, may- ors and other state and federal officials and community leaders to participate in the Arkansas Rural Development Conference. Hosted by the Arkansas Department of Rural Services and the Arkansas Rural Development Commission, this three-day event will provide participants with the opportunity to gain a work- ing knowledge about a variety of programs and services that are available to assist rural communities and their leaders with development, planning and revitalization efforts. In addition to exhibitors, Governor Mike Beebe will be in attendance to present awards to selected grant applicants in a special awards ceremony. It is also an excellent opportunity for members of the state legislature to meet and gain feedback from the people that both make up and lead the state, counties and cities. Te registration form can be found on the Department of

Rural Services website, www.arkansas.gov/drs. If you have ques- tions regarding the Arkansas Rural Development Commission, the Department of Rural Services, the grant programs and ser- vices they provide, or this annual conference, please call (888) 787-2527 or visit their Web site.

Every Day Counts in Arkansas project delivery Every Day Counts (EDC) is a Federal Highway Administration

(FHWA) state-based initiative that uses local teams of federal, state, local and private sector partners to encourage statewide adoption of proven technologies and innovations aimed at shortening and enhancing project delivery. In June 2009 Congress challenged FHWA to address the length of time it takes to complete highway projects. FHWA’s Administrator Victor Mendez began “Every Day

Counts” to address this need to pursue better, faster and smarter ways of doing business.

EDC is designed to identify and deploy innovation aimed at

shortening project delivery, enhancing the safety of our roadways, and protecting the environment. Having access to the flexibilities and technologies available

through Every Day Counts can help highway agencies add value or expedite project delivery where appropriate. For more information, visit FHWA’s Every Day Counts Web site at http://www.fhwa.dot.gov/everydaycounts/ to find out how EDC is changing how America provides transportation projects. For in- formation on local efforts, contact Pete Jilek, FHWA Arkansas’ As- sistant Division Administrator at (501) 324-5626 or Lorie Tudor, AHTD Assistant Chief for Planning at (501) 569-2241
