pecially as the movie “Mud” gained in popularity, however, the county’s 200th celebration in December was second to none when it comes to celebrating the Arkansas County community. Citizens gathered at the DeWitt court- house (Arkansas County is one of 10 coun- ties in Arkansas to have dual county seats) in mid-December to celebrate its bicenten- nial and the agenda was seeded in Arkansas County’s rich history. “It was an exciting time for people that

were born and raised in Arkansas County,” Arkansas County Judge Sonny Cox said. “We were a county 23 years before the state was a state. We also got a chance to roll out some of our records which are the oldest records west of the Mississippi.” Te events included a costume contest,

several historical readings and musical per- formances. Historical photos and stories of days gone by were shared throughout the program. A time capsule was dedicated and ordered to be opened in 25 years. “We prepared for three or four months. When you prepare for an event like this, it is stressful and exciting but when the day finally came, it was a great day to see all the interest that people had and made it all worth it,” said Ruby Al- len, executive assistant.
