downsmail.co.uk Playgrounds in closure threat

RESIDENTS are being urged to write to Maidstone Council in protest at a plan to close 20 play areas throughout the borough. Play areas under threat are in

Woolley Road (Senacre),Westmor- land Close (Shepway), Reinden Grove (Downswood), Somerset Road (Shepway), Bedgebury Close (Vinters Park), Roseholme (Fant), Fountain Park (Armstrong Road, Maidstone), James Street (Maid- stone), Shaw Close (Maidstone)

Solar farm

considered A13.6-HECTARE solar farm is pro- posed on farm land near Collier Street. Ascheme has been earmarked to

install 1,993 solar photovoltaic ar- rays supporting 47,832 panels at Spenny Farm, Spenny Lane. There would also be 14 equipment cabi- nets and a 2msecurity fence. Parker Dann, on behalf of an un- named applicant, said trees and hedges would screen the farm and sheepwould graze the land. Maidstone Council will decide whether a screening opinion needs to be submitted.

Singers offer a musical treat

CLASSICAL music lovers are in for a treat when the Fieri Consort takes time out of its busy 2014 touring schedule to perform at Yalding Church. Fieri draws froma pool of eight singers, including Yalding’s Rose Martin, sometimes performing as a smaller or larger ensemble. The concert in Yalding Church, with works by Byrd, Josquin and Clemens,

is at 7.30pm on Saturday, March 22, and tickets cost £15. Call Karen or Kevin Martin on 01622 814444 or email info@fiericonsort.co.uk

and Freshland Road (Maidstone). In Grove Green, four areas are pro- posed for closure: Peverel Drive, Crownfields, Shepherds Gate Drive and Franklin Drive, along with three in Allington: Juniper Close, Riverhead Close and Keswick Drive. The remainder are at Whitebeam

Drive (Coxheath), Fairhurst Drive (East Farleigh) and Cockpits (Mar- den).

Stuart Jeffery, campaigner for

Greens in Fant ward, said: “Rose- holme is full of young families that need places such as the play area for their kids. “Maidstone has a real problem

with the health of our children and restricting their access to play areas will make this problemworse.” Maidstone Council’s cabinet member for community and leisure services, Cllr John Wilson, said: “We are consulting on a new play areas strategy that will see an un-

precedented £1.75 million invested in play areas across the borough to make sure the majority of people live only a short walk from one of 85 good play areas. “To achieve this, 20 play areas

will be offered to the community to manage. “If they do not wish to, the play equipment will be removed and the area kept as open space for resi- dents to enjoy. We will ensure there is a good alternative close by.”

Oak tree ‘weak’ APROTECTED oak tree may be re- moved at 18 Peter Pease Close, Kingswood. The application, to be decided by Maidstone Council, says the tree is weak and growing close to the rear of the house. The applicant wants to replace it with a smaller tree.

PLANNING permission has been granted to replace two buildings at Langley Roofing Centre in Leeds Road, Langley, with six detached homes and 12 parking spaces. They will comprise five five-bed-
