Village pond ‘will benefit

from homes’ A PLAN has been unveiled to build nine houses east of Glebe Gardens, Old Ashford Road, Lenham. The applicant, the Gooda fam-

ily, says improvements would be made to the village pond in Old Ashford Road if permission is granted. A supporting statement said

the village pond “requires dredging to remove some 30 years accumulation of silt and the management of the trees and shrubs planted around it”. It added: “The stream…will

be greatly enhanced by the re- moval of some of the ash trees, extending the mill pond and lowering the soil by some 150mm next to it to create wet- ter conditions and establishing some traditional, stream side alder coppice.” There would be a block of

three three-bedroom terraces, four four-bedroom semi-de- tached houses and two five-bed- room detached houses. Maidstone Council will deter- mine the outline application.

downsmail.co.uk Housing scheme revised

AREVISED plan for 105 homes in Harrietsham at Tongs Meadow has been submitted. Bovis Homes is proposing a land

swap with the county council that would allow the village primary school to expand and provide the room for the housing estate. The applicant says the transfer of

part of Tongs Meadow, next to the school – which will be the subject of

a separate application – will also provide room for an access and dedicated school dropping-off point thatwould improve the park- ing arrangements inWest Street. The proposed estatewould com-

prise two-bedroom apartments and one, two, three, four and five-bed- roomed semi and detached houses – 40% of which would be afford- able.

Leaves ‘a risk to elderly’

TWO trees in a conservation area may be removed because their leaf drops present a slip hazard for elderly people in Lenham. A planning application by

trustees calls for the felling of a cherry tree and silver birch at Douglas Court Almshouses, High Street. Trustees also say the cherry branches have been keep- ing one of the almshouses “in darkness and will soon be inter- fering with roof tiles and gutter- ing”.

The application form added:

“[It] also shades a communal greenhouse and drops leaves, twigs onto glass.” If permitted by Maidstone Council, the trees would be replaced with a com- munal sitting area for residents.

Talks between the parish council, borough council, KCC and the dis- trict valuer have been ongoing since May 2012, resulting in the re- vised submission. Bovis says the new proposal ad- dresses concerns about design, lay- out and ecology that had been expressed. Maidstone Council will deter- mine the application.

Solar concern

AMANwhowanted to install solar panels in Ulcombe fired a parting shot at Maidstone Council as he withdrew the scheme. John Kenward applied for the 16-

panel array in the grounds of Ju- bilee Hall Barn: a grade II-listed timber-framed residential barn conversion in Stickfast Lane. But he dropped the plan after Graham Parkinson, Maidstone Council’s conservation officer, said the council had heritage concerns. Mr Kenward told the council: “In

the Ulcombe and Headcorn area there are other listed buildings with solar PV panels in much more visible positions, so I conclude that with a bit of an argument I should get this consent should I wish to apply for it at a later time.”
