Parish sets 46% rise in tax share
HARRIETSHAM Parish Council is increasing its parish precept by 46%. The council is demanding from
its taxpayers £43,782 – a rise of £13,782, which equates to £51.65 per band D property – for 2014/15. The parish council lists the fol- lowing reasons for the hike: Reduction in funding from Maidstone Council The parish council says the new parish serv- ices scheme will mean it receives about £8,300 less than it received in 2009/10. Changes to government fund- ing The responsibility for rate sup- port grants has been transferred to local councils but the Government has only part funded the cost of supporting this. The parish council
claims the net effect is that there are more homes in the parish but a reduction in the number of them paying council tax. Purchase of Teers Meadow The parish council bought this land for £70,000 in 2013, forming part of the green corridor highlighted in the neighbourhood plan. The cost of repaying the money borrowed will be £7,800 per year. Clerk’s salary Increase in paid hours to parish clerk Amanda Broadhurst. Reserves These had been used to pay for items of expenditure, ac- cording to the parish council. It was felt that the reserves were at the minimum that was considered prudent and should not be allowed to go any lower.
Widownears charity target
A CHARITY set up by a Bearsted woman after her husband died of Hodgkin’s lymphoma is closing in on its £10,000 target. Paul Maddox died of the cancer
in March 2004, six months after marrying Alexandra, who has raised more than £7,500 for Lym- phoma Research in the past 11 months. The couple are pictured on their wedding day. Fundraising initiatives have in-
cluded running 10K and half marathon races, walking the York- shire Three Peaks, competing in a major series obstacle race, a golf day, aMexican themed barbecue and wreath-making. The “MaddoxMission” hopes to

Hospice’s story
THE story behind the creation of the Heart of Kent Hospice in the 1980s, is told in a re-printed book by the appeal organiser, Ul- combe’s Molly Poulter. “Building the Heart of Kent Hos-
pice,” illustrated with photo- graphs, costs £7.99 and is available from the hospice’s 13 shops or from Mrs Poulter (01622 842988). The aim is to raise £5,000.

Music boss
stands down KENT Music’s county groups manager Geoff Dixon has organ- ised his final concert after 22 years with the education charity. In that time he has worked with
more than 1,500 young musicians, many of whom have gone on to forge professional careers. Geoff joined Kent Music in April
1992 as a supervisor on county group courses and took up the role ofmusic librarian in 1994. In 2000 he became manager of
Kent County YouthOrchestra and in 2009 general manager for the county groups.He has toured withKCYOto South America and given the orches- tra opportunities to play in many prestigious venues, including the Royal Albert Hall.
