The Curzon Community Cinema T

he Curzon Community Cinema is historically unique. It has been a part of Clevedon and entertained the community for most of the 20th

century, and with

the on going renovations hopes to continue to beat its record far into the next century.

Clevedon had been a farming community until the Elton family of Clevedon Court saw the potential of developing the town as a small, select seaside resort in the early 1820’s. New development spread to cover the Hill and formed an area of substantial middle-class housing. The old village along the bottom of the Hill grew to provide the town with domestic servants, larger shops and on April 20th

Films have been presented on this site ever since. The Curzon is now a community cinema, operated as a registered charity.

The Italian Job - Sat 15th Feb - 14.00 • My Fair Lady - Wed 19th Clevedon Comedy Club

levedon Comedy Club was formed when a few people (Maureen and Alan Smith, Doug and Barbara Stinchcombe, Sid Martin and Frank Chesterman) were rehearsing for an entertainment at a Harvest Supper. After rehearsal all went back to the Smiths’ for coffee and discussed the type of show that was missing in Clevedon. That was on 20th September 1970. There was already in existence a Drama Club and an Opera Club, but at that time nothing in light entertainment - and nothing to encourage youngsters to join. It was decided to form a family club and concentrate on light entertainment and pantomime. It would be called The Comedy Club.

The first production was a variety show, “The Roaring 20s” and was produced by Jack Hawdon, compiled by Doug Stinchcombe, the Musical Director was Winifred Ayres with Sid Martin as choreographer and Alan Smith

as Stage Manager, and it was performed in June 1971. The first write-up by Tom O’Sullivan in the local paper stated, “Roaring Twenties a Roaring Success” - a club has been born! This then encouraged more people to join and the first pantomime, “Aladdin” followed in January 1972.

The club has produced a pantomime every year since and “Cinderella” in 2001 saw the largest cast on stage for several years. The club enters the “Rose Bowl” competition every year, which covers the whole of the South West of England, and has twice won the coveted award with “Puss in Boots” produced by Doug

Stinchcombe in 1988 and “Little Miss Muffet” produced by Val Vella in 1995. The club also produces a revue type show every other year.
