Speed up US international trade – and that’s an order


President Obama signed off plans to streamline US international trade on 19 February and pledged to complete an International Trade Data System (ITDS) by December 2016,


to


drastically speed up import and export clearance times. An Executive Order, signed aboard Air Force One, aims to streamline


the export and import process by cutting processing and approval times “from days to minutes”, especially for small businesses. Though the development of the ITDS has been under way for some time, the order establishes a deadline for completion, requires agencies to move from paper to


electronic data collection and calls for public posting of implementation plans and schedules. According to the US Government, businesses

Dover Harbour Board plans to start work soon a revised version of its ambitious harbour redevelopment scheme, including new general cargo berths. Plans to develop a ‘Terminal 2’ (T2) ro ro


facility at Western Docks – currently used mainly for cruise passengers – have existed for some time. The original T2 proposal was based on previous forecasts that suggested roll-on roll-off (ro-ro) freight traffic would increase dramatically over the next 20-30 years. But,


following the recent economic downturn and the subsequent impact on traffic growth, the port has adopted a new strategy based on developing new cargo berths at the port. A spokeswoman explained that the


recession and subsequent fall in ro ro freight traffic had reduced the immediate need for additional significant ferry capacity. “That need may eventually come, but in the mean time, the port wishes to protect capacity using its
