Hammer forging Company director achieves chartered status

Aerospace and motorsport surface engineering specialist Wallwork Heat Treatment is marking the election of technical director Peter Carpenter to Fellow of the Institute of Directors (IoD), and his qualification by examination as a Chartered Director. Peter explained, “I have taken both the IoD certificate and diploma courses at Salford University and join a group of just over 1000 Chartered Directors world- wide.”

Peter has been a director

of the Bury and Birmingham businesses since 1992, having

joined as a metallurgist in 1983. “There have been significant changes in the industry over 30 years, our main activity is still in heat treatment for general engineering, but with more customers in advanced sectors such as aerospace, motorsport and nuclear there are new technical challenges. This has required major investment in research and development leading to more sophisticated thermal treatment and coating processes,” Peter explained. He was involved in the selection and acquisition of Cambridge based technical coating specialist

Tecvac in the late 1990’s. To build the business he initiated substantial investment, including relocation to a new purpose built factory, new equipment and the establishment of research, development and metallurgical laboratories equal to that of leading university metallurgical laboratories. The Wallwork Group has stayed a family owned business since it was first registered in 1959 as a heat treatment processor, moving to the Bury site in 1979. In 1984 the company acquired its first vacuum heat treatment furnaces and shortly after set up a foundry
