Turf Side Up TURF SIDE UP! The not so serious side of the industry Hair today - gone tomorrow!

ATHLETES could soon be tested for drugs using hair samples according to Sir Craig Reedie, the incoming president of the World Anti-Doping Agency (WADA).

Briton Reedie revealed that a £6m fund from the International Olympic Committee (IOC) could lead to new testing techniques to catch cheats.

Currently, athletes are tested using blood and urine samples, yet traces of some drugs can last longer in hair and could improve testing.

“This new fund from the IOC will create tremendous

opportunities for advances in anti-doping and allow our scientists to look at alternative approaches to sample testing for banned substances,” Reedie said.

“This is a really exciting development and means we can look at approaches that, in the past, have been unaffordable.”

UNOFFICIAL Chelsea FC toilet paper is now on sale in the Central Asian republic of Uzbekistan, the BBC has reported.

Uzbek website Press News published the story alongside an image of the gaudy packaging.

The English Premier League is popular among Uzbeks, and rivalry between fans appears to be fierce. Some commentators on Facebook thought it had been manufactured by a Manchester United fan. One loyal Chelsea supporter even

ARSENAL have reminded Santi Cazorla of his club responsibilities after the Spaniard was forced to apologise for insulting rivals Tottenham.

Cazorla and former Arsenal player Robert Pires were pictured with an unnamed woman holding a piece of paper that read: “What do we think of Tottenham? S---! And what do we think s---? Tottenham.”

The picture was then posted on Twitter and was retweeted around the internet.

Cazorla claims he was unaware of what was written, but that did

Cazorla posted an apology from himself and Pires on Twitter that read: “Our apoligizes to the Totenham fans, we couldn’t see the paper.”

Many street markets in Central Asia sell Premier League merchandise such as scarves and replica shirts - most of them counterfeit - but branded toilet paper appears to be a novelty.

Never heard of either? Neither had we until we picked up on a news item bestowing the virtues of the Hurling the Silver Ball Festival in St. Ives.

Once widespread across Cornwall, the sport is akin to both rugby and football, apparently, but the ‘pitch’ is the open roads and beaches of the town - although police advise car drivers to stay away, thankfully!

The annual St. Ives hurling match happens on Feast Monday each February - the feast is on the Sunday nearest to 3rd February. The game starts at 10.30am when the sterling silver ball, weighing just over a pound, is thrown from the wall of the Parish Church by the Mayor to the crowd below on the beach. The ball is passed from one to another on the beach and then up into the streets of the town. The person in possession of the

Wife Carrying!

WIFE Carrying is a sport in which male competitors race whilst each carrying a female team mate. The objective is for the male to carry the female through a special obstacle track in the fastest time. The sport was first introduced in Sonkajärvi, Finland.

Several types of carry may be practised: piggyback, fireman’s carry (over the shoulder), or Estonian-style - the wife hangs upside-down with her legs around the husband’s shoulders, holding onto his waist!

The rules state; “the wife to be carried may be your own, the neighbour’s, or you may have found her further afield; she must, however, be over seventeen years of age.”

And; “the minimum weight of the wife to be carried is 49kg. If she is less, she will be

Another version of the game exists at St. Columb, but this game finishes when the ball leaves the bounds of the village.

The game is known as ‘Beating the Bounds’ in Bodmin.

Championships have been held annually in Sonkajärvi, since 1992, where the prize is equivalent to the wife’s weight in beer.

Wife carrying is also played in Australia, USA, Hong Kong and Estonia.
